Pi Day

14th March 2016

Pi Day is celebrated on 14th March, if we wrote the date out in the US style it would read 03.14.16, which is pi rounded to the first five digits. 3.14159.

Pi is the special relationship between the circumference of a circle and its diameter. It is also an irrational number, which means that its value cannot be expressed exactly as a simple fraction.

Computers have calculated pi to over three trillion digits. It is an important part of many mathematical formulas. We use it when calculating the area and circumference of circles.

The Year 5 children have been seeing how many digits of pi, they can learn. Well done to Freddie, who managed to recite the first 50 digits of pi exactly. He was given a special award for this impressive talent.
