Last week, we looked at a bird’s anatomy, identified two types of feathers, learnt how to recognise a few of them and had a go at sitting quietly and listening to bird song.
This week the children have been feeding the birds. Reception and Years 1 and 2 mixed lard, bird seed, cereal and leftover dried fruit together, then squished and squashed the sticky mixture into the gaps between the scales on a dried pinecone, creating high calorie snacks for the birds to feed on. We hung them on the bird feeding station in the woods.
There were a couple of inquisitive robins watching patiently as we made the edible mixture, waiting for us to leave.
Nursery and Kindy created beautiful hanging bird feeders by threading cereal onto a string. The concentration on their little faces as they coaxed the string through the hole in the cereal was a joy to watch!
The children all agreed, after our discussions, that it’s really important to feed our British garden birds, to help them survive the season and any food shortages.
