Would your child rather be kicking a football than picking up a book? Like all passions, whether it be horse-riding or castles, one way to get them excited about reading well is with fiction and non-fiction titles about their favourite topics.
With the football Euros 2020 (21) competition already in mid-flow, books about the ‘beautiful game’ are plentiful and varied, from World Cup histories and step-by-step technique manuals to brilliant football fiction for all ages.
Another option for getting football-loving kids excited about reading for pleasure are some brilliant soccer-inspired literacy activities from the National Literacy Trust in the Love Reading 2 toolkit. Director of the Trust Jonathan Douglas says:
“We know from our experience of working with reluctant readers just how powerful football can be in getting children to enjoy reading, which in turn gives them vital skills for the future.”
We have a full range of the Classic Football Heroes books (about individual top international players), as well as some fascinating fact books and biographies, plus lots of other football stories for all ages in the Barrow Hills libraries. Come and ask and I will help you to find them for you.
