This Tuesday, Year 5 travelled to the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard to visit the Mary Rose Museum. The trip complimented the Tudor history topic we have been covering this term and the children were very excited to see the remains of Henry VIIIs flagship preserved on site.
For the first part of the morning, Year 5 attended a hands-on Fighting Fit workshop led by the staff from the Education Unit within the museum. The staff posed the question – how fit do you think the crew members were aboard the ship? We then investigated the weekly diet and exercise regime of the crew to answer this question. The children loved this part of the day and asked some great questions and displayed their knowledge of the topic.
After a short lunch, we walked around the museum and discovered a wealth of information about the ship, its crew and Tudor life. There were lots of interactive displays to marvel at and plenty of staff on hand to answer the many questions our Year 5s had. This was a fantastic trip; all the children certainly enjoyed their day out and learnt loads of interesting details about the Mary Rose. A return trip is already being planned.
