Under the guidance of Mr Gaszka, our Year 8 children set up a number of bags of culture from which they hope to grow oyster mushrooms over the coming weeks.
During their lesson, after a thorough sterilisation process, wheat-based mushroom spores were carefully measured and added to a growth medium. After this, children calculated volumes of water necessary to help promote the growth of our fungi. Finally, a soldering iron was used to seal the bags from exposure to outside elements and allow them to grow without competition.
Mr Gaszka went on to explain a number of key concepts to do with the growth of fungi inclusive of the mycelium and how fungi are essential for decomposition essential for the cycle of life.
