It’s been another busy week in Reception! The children have been thinking about Remembrance and have thoroughly enjoyed having history brought to life by looking at photos and sharing stories of family members who took part in the war.
One Great-Grandfather of a Reception child was taken as a prisoner of war, spending four years in Singapore’s Changi jail: another signed up at seventeen years old and was sent to Borneo with the Royal Navy, repairing naval vessels which had been damaged in battles. The RAF was also represented, with a Great-Grandad who was a Leading Aircraftsman with the RAF who witnessed the great air raids on Caen; another was an RAF Hurricane pilot and Squadron Leader. Back in Blighty, another Great-Grandad was a member of the Home Guard. We even had a Great-Uncle who was saved from a bullet by a metal case in his pocket!
We talked about Remembrance poppies and the children used absorbent coffee filters and red food colouring to make beautiful poppy decorations. They were quick to make the connection between mopping up spilt milk at snack time with absorbent paper towels, and the way the red food colouring was absorbed by the white coffee filters.
When the poppies were dry, we used them to decorate our lovely ‘Remembrance’ display.
