This week, our school caterers Thomas Franks brought their ‘smoothie bike’ to Barrow Hills. We had hoped to create an event, involving all children, encouraging them to eat more fresh fruit via smoothies but due to inclement weather at break time, the bike was set up in the refectory. It is a traditional bike modified to have a blender connected to the front wheel so, as you peddle the blender blades move, chopping and mixing the fresh fruit and juices into a delicious smoothie – IF you peddle hard enough!
Children from Year 2 to 8 chose their smoothie ingredients from a variety of fresh fruits – apples, pears, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, pineapple, banana and juices (apple or orange) and got peddling! What better way to recover from the exertion of peddling than with a refreshing glass of the smoothie you have just made yourself.
There was a lot of interest from spectators passing the refectory, and some even got a tasty glass of fresh fruit smoothie as well. A big thanks to the Thomas Franks team for the loan of the bike.
