Welcome to the Barrow Hills Summer Reading Challenge.
I have been encouraging the children to have fun organising their home book shelves and to decide which books they would like to read over the summer. The challenge is to read six books – read anything anywhere! Complete the attached form and return to your teacher in September to be entered into the prize draw.
If you would like to join the local library they also run a similar six book challenge online or in person https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/. This offers a fantastic framework to motivate children to borrow and review books during the summer months. The Surrey Library can be joined online and offers a great selection of audio books. https://surreylibraries.ca/onlinecard.
We are also offering the opportunity to enter a children’s design competition to create the endpapers for a book called ‘The Thousand Year Tree’. This children’s book has been created by one of our visiting authors Lucy Reynolds in partnership with Surrey Hills Society and celebrates Surrey’s ancient trees. Children from Reception to Year 4 have been given a paper template to bring home but the competition is open to children from 4-11 years old. If you would like another template please click here and scroll down to ‘how do I apply’.
A little reading everyday provides a fantastic start to children in September and through some unknown magic also helps spelling, creativity and our mental health. Enjoy your summer.
