Recently, tree hugging has been embraced as a means to foster a deeper connection with nature. It is believed to reduce stress, improve immunity, lower blood pressure by releasing oxytocin, the hormone of love, trust and warm fuzzy feelings!
I decided to give it a go with Year 1 this week. We each selected a tree, made contact with a cheek and wrapped our arms around it. Taking deep breaths in and out, the children remained hugging their tree for a lot longer than I thought possible!
When we regrouped around the fire circle, the children remained peaceful and talked about feeling ‘calm’, ‘soft’, ‘relaxed’ and ‘feeling like I was in a hammock’.
If it all gets a bit hectic this weekend, go hug a tree!
