On Thursday 25th November, our very bubbly U11 girls hockey team – Tally (6G), Beatrice (4G), Cleo (6G), Ottilie (6G), Eloise (6R), Xanthe (5R), Amelie (6G), Izzy (6G) and Clara (6R) – travelled to Glastonbury to participate in the National Hockey Finals at Millfield School. The team finished 10th overall and made it to the final of the Plate Competition. They lost the final 2-0 to St Neot’s.
24 teams made it through regional qualifiers from across the country (161 teams entered in total) and Barrow Hills played the following five teams in the knockout stages of this tournament:
Langley Prep: 2-0 win
Hoe Bridge: 0-1 loss
Ratcliffe College: 0-3 loss
Warwick Prep: 2-1 win
Hurstpierpoint: 3-3 draw
We finished in 3rd place in our section overall and progressed through to the Plate Competition:
Quarter finals: Bluecoat 1-1 draw (won on penalty flicks)
Semi Finals: The Oratory 1-1 draw (won on penalty flicks)
Final: St Neot’s 0-2 loss
It was a day full of pride for the Barrow Hills team. The girls played an incredible standard of hockey, playing the ball wide out of defence and moving the ball down the line early into our attacking D for a quick shot on goal. Despite one head injury and one bout of sickness, it did not stop us! Our short corner routines were a polished manoeuvre, as were our penalty flick team who won both the quarter and semi finals on penalty flicks.
“Girls – your hard work in training and matches has paid off and you should be very proud to have beaten some top teams to finish 10th overall out of 161 teams who entered.
Very well done to all of you. Cleo (6G) received our girl of the tournament award. Nor will we not forget Eloise’s (6R) incredible dive to the right to save a penalty flick. Girls well played and thank you!”
