Children from Reception to Year 8 have been spending weekly time in the library and are being encouraged to have a book with them at all times (either a home book or library book). Ideally they should take this book home for evening reading and complete their reading record.
You can help by finding a nightly reading routine and ensuring the reading book is back in the school bag. The value of reading a book is still hugely powerful and children who read for pleasure have better shown to have increased empathy, mental health resilience and academic outcomes. Just 10 minutes spent together either reading out loud to each other or reading your own books side by side encourages a love of reading. The tendency can be to spend less time doing this as children get older but the value of sharing stories is always very impactful.
Thank you to the children who completed the Summer Reading Challenge, all the chocolate and book prizes have been awarded.
Congratulations to Year 7 and 8 who are well on their way to hitting their reading target of 25,000 minutes by half term using their Track My Read. Ask to see their portal and how much they have contributed to the 8,000 minutes read so far.
In other exciting news, Parker and Indy turned five last week, and to celebrate their special day, they each donated a book to our school library. I was thrilled to receive these wonderful additions. The books are currently being stamped and catalogued, and soon they will be available for children to borrow and enjoy at home. We had the pleasure of reading them in class and they were a big hit! Be sure to keep an eye out for them during your next visit to the library. Thank you Parker and Indy, we hope you enjoyed your birthday.
The library is open during break times on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and please email me on jed@barrowhills.org if you would like any book recommendations.
