On Friday, Year 1 visited our science lab, where they were delighted to find Mr Gaszka surrounded by a variety of plants.
The children are learning about features of plants and trees so it was fantastic to listen to Mr Gaszka impart his knowledge about the different plants he grows in the greenhouse.
The children looked at a banana plant, a fig plant, a Spanish geranium, a fuschia, a Turkish coffee plant, Mother of Thousands and an Aloe Vera plant.
The children were all given a tiny seedling from a Mother of Thousands to take home at the end of term.
They also became familiar with new vocabulary, including the word ‘stratification’ – the placing of seeds close together in layers in moist sand or peat to preserve them or to help them germinate. Mr Gaszka had some seeds which had been kept in the fridge to encourage growth at a different time of year to their natural cycle.
Huge thanks to Mr Gaszka for his time and kindness in giving all the children a seedling pot. We all loved listening to his amazing facts and guessing the plant.
