This week in art, the children in Year 2 painted some daffodils. They could only draw what they could see so every painting was slightly different. They had to think carefully about colour, shape and scale. We think their paintings are fabulous!
On Thursday, Mr Hatcher came to Year 2 to talk about being a firefighter, linking with our topic of London and The Great Fire of London. Year 2 were very excited that Mr Hatcher had brought his firefighter kit. Mr Hatcher told Year 2 what it was like being a firefighter. The class then asked a range of questions about this job. They had a go at sweeping their feet along the ground and stomping their feet with their eyes closed as though they were a firefighter going into a fire to check the ground. They all tried on Mr Hatcher’s helmet and Seb dressed up in the firefighter outfit. Mr Hatcher told Year 2 he had to be ready in just one minute in all his gear. We timed him and it took him 29 seconds, Year 2 were very impressed! They also discussed how firefighters must be scared going into a fire but also brave at the same time. We then talked about how The Great Fire of London would have been very different if they had firefighters like we do today. Thank you Mr Hatcher, we all really enjoyed your visit.
Mental Health Awareness Week – Year 2 Growing Together
During Mental Health Awareness Week, Year 2 have focused on discussing our feelings. At the start of the week, Year 2 created a feelings paper chain with Mrs Holmes. They looked at a range of feelings and when they might have experienced these emotions. They then wrote these down and created a class paper chain. Year 2 have been using their new ’emotions register’ to place their token onto how they are feeling when they come in and change it during the day if their feelings change.
At the end of the week, the children explored with Mrs Livingston ‘reaching for the stars’. They started Friday morning with the S Club 7 track ‘Reach’. They all enjoyed dancing and singing along to this (particularly Mrs Livingston!) Year 2 then explored creating goals about what they want to work on, focusing on their emotional growth goals. We are looking forward to using our emotions charts to regularly talk about how we are feeling.
