After a wet and windy bank holiday weekend, the Year 7 and 8 children held their breath for a sunny Tuesday to hold their Tenner Challenge Market Day. The weather certainly did not disappoint. The children spent the morning setting up stalls, making last minute changes to posters and generally experiencing a mixture of excitement and nervousness. When the announcement was made that the market was open, they were besieged by a ravenous horde of Year 3 and 4 children, eager to spend their hard earned pocket money.
There was a great selection of stalls to choose from, including fresh waffles, churros, a chocolate fountain with some healthy fruit, delicious cookies and frozen fruit slushies. The children had also built some old fashioned games such as ring toss, knocking cans off the wall as well as a dart game, where, if successful, you were able to cream pie one of the Year 8s! There were also some stalls aimed at parents, with some wonderful gift boxes and gorgeous coasters.
The children really benefitted from the whole process, with some great teamwork, strong leadership as well as many groups understanding the need to compromise when there are too many ideas on the table. The money raised will be going towards our Lenten appeal as well as the Senior Common Room. We will spend our next lesson counting money, and I will make it into a proper maths lesson, working out the mean, median and mode for the different coins and notes.
A big thank you to all staff and parents for helping out both behind the scenes and on the day. The courtyard was left tidy but I think the next life skills lesson will be learning how to wash up effectively – this could make a great homework!
