Upper Prep Learning Support & ExtensionRecognising and celebrating every child

We recognise and develop what children are good at. Each child has a unique and independent identity and are encouraged to be positive, dream big and to believe in themselves and each other. We feel it is important for every child to feel they have a special talent or gift which is recognised and celebrated in the school community. No child at Barrow Hills should feel invisible.

We also believe children need to recognise areas they need to develop regardless of their ability. Lots of our work involves building the children’s tenacity and independence to empower them to reach their targets and to help to prepare for the next stages of their learning

As Head of Learning Support, I believe passionately in encouraging children to believe in themselves, and to find what ignites their curiosity. My greatest privilege working with the children at Barrow Hills is recognising their individual skills and abilities and acknowledging and celebrating them.

Pippa Goedkoop, Head of Learning Support and Extension

Children who have learning differences and/or who are gifted and talented may receive support individually, in small groups and in the whole class. In some cases, these children may need some additional targets to enhance and develop their learning. A Learning Plan (LP) is created directly with the student, supported by key members of staff and parents.

For those needing extra support to develop independence, a ‘pupil passport’ accompanies them throughout the timetable, providing staff and pupils with a bespoke toolkit of resources and strategies. In the Upper School, self-determination is further nurtured through preparation for scholarships in areas such as drama, sports, and academics. These pursuits require personal commitment, which is warmly encouraged and thoughtfully scaffolded by our teachers.

The Department provides on-going support and training for teachers and parents to constantly strive for the best education for children in our care. A parent support group called the Umbrella Group is held on a termly basis for parents and Learning Support and Extension staff to share good practice.

Our son has thrived under the careful care and appreciation of so many wonderful and special staff members at Barrow Hills. Thank you so much for all you continue to do to support his learning; with your help and guidance and his hard work he has achieved the most fantastic results.
