Weekly Newsletter 17th March 2023
Dear Parents,
Last Friday’s Quiz Night was a roaring success, apart from the fact that my team came second! It was great to see the Refectory full to bursting with parents representing Nursery to Year 8, as well as former families and staff. Thanks go to Rosie Aneja and her team of question setters and everyone who helped out on the night with decorating the room and running the bar. The pizza was cooked on site by Milford Station’s Zoo Café, and Mr Crisell superbly compèred the evening.
This week has been a very successful one for girls’ sport with the under 11 hockey team winning the tournament hosted by Portsmouth Grammar School on Wednesday, and yesterday the under 12 netball team won the IAPS plate competition at Ipswich School. Mrs Burnett and Mrs Clarke are very proud sports coaches!
On the academic front, the children have experienced two amazing theme days for our STEAM week. On Wednesday, Mr Behan arranged a visit from a mobile planetarium and on Thursday Miss Tyrrell coordinated a day of different science and technology workshops that ran throughout the day. More details about this exciting week will follow, but I will say that there was a real buzz of excitement throughout the year groups as children animatedly discussed their experiences with one another. Pre-Prep also had the added fun of the visiting farm animals, which had been postponed from last week’s snowy Wednesday. Yet another educational trip took place this week with Year 4 studying habitats at Pulborough on Tuesday. I hope all the hard work that goes into organising and running these trips and visits has made an impression on the children and enriched their learning.
The busy week also contained a day trip to London for the Head Boy, Deputy Head Boy and senior members of the choir to attend the Bridewell Service at St Bride’s, Fleet Street. At this service the mace of Bridewell Royal Hospital is blessed by the Lord Mayor of London, and pledges are given to continue to support the education provided by King Edward’s and Barrow Hills by the governing body (The Court of Bridewell) and the Corporation of London. On Monday, we will be holding our own Bridewell Service in assembly.
Today’s assembly was led by Year 7 who introduced their Market Day project which is going to be held next Thursday afternoon at school.
A further visit took place this week. We were all delighted to welcome Mrs Clarke and baby Phoebe on Wednesday. There was lots of excitement among staff and children in being introduced and having cuddles!
Finally, I would like to say ‘good luck’ to all the girls taking their ballet exams tomorrow.

Pre-PrepDear Parents,
Thank you for your sponsorship for our Lenten Charity ‘Dreams Come True’. Year 1 and Year 2’s read-a-thon resulted in an extra 46 hours of reading over the last week. A special mention to Ralph and Theo for their extra minutes! Nursery and Kindy completed an ‘assault’ course and Reception had an egg and spoon race. I was sorry to have missed it!
In our assembly this week, we celebrated Jacob (Rec) and George (Rec) achieving their Micro Duke Award in Reception, and Poppy (2R) her Mini Duke Gold Award. So well done, and I am looking forward to handing out more certificates over the next term to those who are completing their challenges. I hope you are finding them useful and fun!
The visit from Mill Farm on Wednesday was a real highlight of the week in Pre-Prep. Never before have goats had such a thorough grooming, nor did I realise the love for micro pigs amongst the Barrow Hills’ staff! Please look inside the newsletter for photos. We were really impressed with Reception – Year 2’s response to the Planetarium. Some children were initially a little wary, which is not surprising, but all enjoyed the luxury of lying down and looking at the stars and planets around them inside the Planetarium.
We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday for our Pre-Prep Spring Concert in the Chapel at 8.45am, followed by our Easter bonnet parade. Parents with younger siblings are encouraged to attend our dress rehearsal on Tuesday at 8.45am.
On Friday, Pre-Prep finishes for the term at 11.45am. If you would like to collect your child earlier at 10.40am and complete the bunny run and Easter egg hunt with them, please complete the google form that will be sent via the portal on Tuesday.

Swim School over Easter
Sally Crathern who teaches swimming to Pre-Prep, operates a swim school from King Edward’s Witley where she will be running a four day intensive swimming course from April 3rd to 6th. This is for half an hour each morning, any time between 9.00 am and 11.00 am. This course is perfect for any children over the age of 4, from nervous non swimmers to strong club standard. The cost is £44 per child for the four days or £66 for the stronger swimmer doing a 45 minute class. Group sizes are small with teachers in the water with young/weak swimmers. The aim in to improve water confidence, learn new skills and improve on stroke technique. All teachers are DBS checked and have up to date life saving qualifications. Notifying all fans of delicious coffee!
A new local coffee business is launching from the Milford Heath car park very near the school on Tuesday 14th March. From a converted horse box they will be barista crafted coffee and a range of Pastries and Cakes (Sausage Rolls, Pastel de Natas, Danish Pastries, GF Brownies etc..).

Uniform Reminder
Please could we kindly remind you about the following school uniform:
Hair accessories, including scrunchies, should be either burgundy or blue.
Any hair that is below the shoulder should be completely tied back.
Hair should not be dyed.
Children should not have coloured braids in their hair.
All earrings should be small plain studs.
Thank you for your support in enforcing that the children arrive to school in the correct uniform.
Bacon Butty Stall
We kindly ask that children do not bring food and hot drinks in to school buildings that have been purchased on Friday morning from the Bacon Butty stall. The food tends to be dropped along corridors and in classrooms and the hot drinks are a concern when being carried around the school – particularly to younger children. Thank you.

Cancellation of Fixtures
If fixtures are cancelled due to adverse weather, please be assured that we will notify you as soon as we are aware of the change.

Absence Request Form
This Absence Request Form must be completed for any reason that a child is not in school, other than illness. These are also found on the Parent Portal. Thank you.
Portal
Please can we remind you that the majority of the communications are sent via the parent portal on a Tuesday. Communications will vary for each child dependent on a variety of factors e.g. class, gender, sets. The Prep team sheet can be changed at any time therefore we encourage you to check the portal on a regular basis.
