Dear Parents
It has been wonderful to return to school with weather bringing a taste of warm, sunny summer days ahead. Let’s hope that it remains that way to allow the children to make the most of what is going to be a busy term.
Niki and I managed to get a much needed break and we hope that everyone else has benefited from the holidays too. The main issue for me is that having managed to relax for the first time in ages, it has been a struggle to get back up to speed!
During the holidays, the estates and grounds teams, plus contractors have been working hard at school. Much of the work has been ‘invisible’ with a new swimming pool boiler and three new boilers for Great Roke. The pool, therefore, is up to temperature for the start of term, which is wonderful news. There has also been a lot of work continuing on the grounds to bring them back into order. With the plants and flowers blossoming and blooming the school has been looking fabulous in the sunshine.
I thought that it would be useful to highlight some special dates for you to be aware of. Details of these events will be sent out closer to the time:
- Whole School Photograph – Tuesday 17th May
- An evening of music with the renowned Crispian Steele-Perkins (in aid of the Guildford and South Surrey Branch of Parkinson’s UK) – Saturday 21st May
- Proms on the back lawn to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the school’s 70th anniversary of being at Great Roke – Saturday 11th June
- Sports Day – Thursday 16th June
- Our next Bridewell Talk which will focus on e-safety and wellbeing – Wednesday 22nd June
- Governors’ tea and presentation to parents – Thursday 23rd June
- Pre-Prep summer performance – Wednesday 29th June
- Prize Giving for all Prep children – Thursday 30th June
- BHCC summer party (tickets still available via Classlist) – Friday 1st July
I hope that, like me, you are looking forward to the term ahead and once more being able to enjoy all the events and activities without restrictions.

It is so lovely to see all the children (and staff!) back looking so refreshed from their Easter holiday. We have a busy summer term ahead. Please look on the Portal for the topics your child will be exploring this term. Various trips are planned including a visit to Portchester Castle and Winchester Science Centre and of course our summer production at the end of term. We also have some ‘chick kits’ arriving in school in May!
Swimming has started this term in our pool with Mrs Crathern so please make sure kit is in school on Fridays for Reception and Year 1, Mondays for Year 2.

Can you help?
The BHCC relies on parent participation to ensure successful events. Every parent at Barrow Hills is automatically a member of the Committee and very welcome to come to meetings or pop an idea over. We hope that you continue to support us, beginning with the events planned for the rest of this term. Martin Bicknell Cricket Academy is coming to Holloway Hill on Thursday evenings to deliver cricket training for Godalming Girls. Further details found here.
Engines Off Please!
Did you know that an idling vehicle produces almost twice the emissions as a moving vehicle? Prioritise children’s health and the health of our planet over the comfort of drivers who repeatedly keep their vehicle engine running when parked. Please turn your engine off when waiting in the school car park.

Absences on match afternoons
Please notify games staff of any absences on a match afternoon in advance when possible.
Absence Request Form
This Absence Request Form must be completed for any reason that a child is not in school, other than illness. These are also found on the Parent Portal. Thank you.
Portal
Please can we remind you that the majority of the communications are sent via the parent portal on a Tuesday. Communications will vary for each child dependent on a variety of factors e.g. class, gender, sets. The Prep team sheet can be changed at any time therefore we encourage you to check the portal on a regular basis.
