Outdoor Maths in Year 1
We took advantage of a break in the weather this week to get outside for our daily Maths lesson.
The children have been learning place value to 20, and very much enjoyed a ‘treasure hunt’ style activity in the Pre-Prep garden. They were tasked with putting large number cards from 11 to 20 in the correct order. They then had to seek out cards with different representations of numbers to 20 on them, which had been hidden around the garden. Once they had found a card, they had to work out which number to 20 they had found, and put it on the correct large number card.
The children were very quick at working out the number of tens and ones they had on their card; and enjoyed the maths so much there were cries of “Again! Let’s do it again!” when all the cards had been located and ordered.
It is lovely to see the children taking such enjoyment in their maths learning!
