Mr P’s Maths Column

Welcome back to the Summer Term! The 4 May (this Sunday) is one of my favourite days of the year! It is known as Star Wars day (based on “May the force be with you” from the Star Wars movies becoming the pun “May the 4th be with you”). While Star Wars is a fictional universe, some interesting number facts about it.

Note that most of this information has been taken from https://phys.org

  • The Star Wars canonical universe has over 20,000 characters, of which about 7500 have significant impact on plot!
  • These characters are spread among 640 different communities on 294 planets.
  • Weirdly, 80% of characters in Star Wars are human.
  • The timeline of the various stories and histories of the Star Wars universe spans 36,000 years.
  • Throughout this 36,000 years, there are 1,367 Jedi and 724 Sith accounted for, although these figures are disputed depending on which source you believe.
  • The original Death Star was 160km in diameter.
  • An X-wing fighter is 12.5m long and a Tie fighter is 9m long.
  • A Star Destroyer is anywhere between one kilometre to two kilometres long.
  • Darth Vader is 6 foot 8 inches tall, or 203cm, or a little over 2m tall.
  • Luke Skywalker was 19-years old in the original Star Wars: A New Hope movie and was only paid $1000 a week.
  • A Wookie, like Chewbacca, can live up to 400 years.

· As of 29 June 2024, and assuming you watched 24 hours a day, it would take you 8 days, 1 hour and 33 minutes to watch all of the canon Star Wars films and spin offs. It would be more than that now…

· There is no number more famous (or rather infamous) in the world of Star Wars than the number 66. In Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith we see Emperor Palpatine order Commander Cody to execute Order 66. It was that very command that turned the clones against the Jedi.

May the 4th be with you!

Parent problem of the week

Master Yoda was asked which is his favorite number. He replied:

“All numbers powerful they are! Connected to the force they are. When divided by 6 my number remainder 5 gives. When divided by 5 remainder 4 it gives. When divided by 5 remainder 3 it gives. Less than 100 my number is.”

What is Master Yoda’s number?
