Nursery Learning FoundationsEarly foundations

Every child’s first experience of school here is caring and fun.

Playing is fundamental to every child’s learning and we aim to inspire our lovely two-to-three year-olds to feel excited about school and learning from their very first day with us at Barrow Hills. Within our magical and beautiful rural setting, our Nursery children develop new skills by choosing to play alongside or with their peers in the calm, warm environment of their bright, well-equipped and industrious classroom and covered outside play and explore area.

The Early Years framework is the basis for all our teaching and learning but our bespoke curriculum extends learning much further with an expansive co-curricular offering which creates opportunity to explore and deepen interests. Sport, French and Music are taught by specialists, in addition to Forest School which is just one part of the children’s outdoor activities in our natural classroom environment.

Our team ensures that good foundations are laid and imaginations are sparked. Through play and interaction, our youngest children learn how to share, take turns, work collaboratively and take responsibility for themselves, developing good manners prior to moving on to Kindy as they approach the age of four.

Our small classes of up to 12 children are led by excellent practitioners with a flair for imaginary play time and true enthusiasm for the care and education of young children. Their expert approach and the warm family atmosphere they create allows our youngest children to progress and be supported so that they become confident in their personal endeavours and development through fun, colourful and creative activities.

Each day’s learning activities are shaped around the interests of the Nursery children which provides an engaging in a wonderfully diverse range of creative, physical and musical moments in which to learn.

Celebrating successes

With broad friendships and social learning in mind, our Nursery children are given many opportunities to mix with our Kindy children, to play and learn side-by-side. They also join the rest of Pre-Prep to participate in glorious productions (big and small), when we feel they are ready.

Celebrating individual success however big or small is a daily occurrence in many areas of school life in class and particularly in assembly; opportunity to show and tell, a painting, a certificate, or a beautifully crafted piece of play-dough art are all very important and formative moments of pride and achievement for our little learners.

We believe that quiet self-confidence arises from a deep connection with an area of personal interest, broad friendships, nature and every small moment of being encouraged to feel proud of a success.

Barrow Hills School feels like a family: one with a great big garden, space to run and play, and a lot of love.

It’s lovely to see the children getting lost in their own imaginations, being creative, constructive and self-motivated, and progressing to their senior schools having taken advantage of the natural environment we offer.”

We like to think of Barrow Hill’s children as being ‘free-range kids’ who just get out there. For as we say at Barrow Hills, there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing choices.

Our idyllic woodland setting and approach to learning gives our children space to play, explore, feel connected and grow beyond the norm. Our forest awaits and there is certainly magic in the air at our school. Why not come and explore it with us?
