The Junior Prep department is made up of Years 3 and 4 and we are privileged to have our own building adjacent to the main school.
The combination of excellent caring class teachers and subject specialists give the children a big advantage in their learning.
English and maths are streamed by ability and we monitor the children's progress closely, looking to support and extend each individual child. The children are involved in their own target setting, regularly reviewing their progress and looking to challenge themselves.
Children at this age begin to discover their talents and it is important, therefore, that we recognise this and nurture their development. Music, drama, art, DT, games and Forest School feature in a broad and stimulating curriculum. We have a significant intake of children into Year 3 from local primary schools. New children are warmly welcomed by their peers and quickly settle into the wide and varied curriculum that makes up a Barrow Hills school day.
From Year 3 the children love being part of the house system and representing one of three houses. They can achieve points for their house for good work, behaviour, and also not so good points, demerits and debits! Weekly in assembly children are given a running total, to their delight, as to how their house is doing. This culminates in the Clover cup for the house which has gained the most credits. Regular meetings are held as well as house competitions which include singing, world poetry day, a creative writing competition and sports day, for which cups are awarded.
As Head of Junior Prep my aim is to ensure that there is an excellent relationship between school and home and that children achieve to the best of their academic ability.
