Share-a-Story Month for Years 3-8

We are never too old to take part in Share-a-Story, this month’s library initiative.

We want to reward the children who are reading regularly at home and encourage everyone to give it a go.

During the library lesson Mrs Dudley will be distributing House Points to children who have x3 parent signatures in their reading record. Children can either read out loud or read quietly in the same room and ideally the reading record will show which page you have reached.

Reading for pleasure is linked directly to sharing stories with our family and peers and the discussions these generate. Being read to or reading out loud is a fantastic skill to develop and also helps foster a greater understanding of the text.

Life is busy so here are a few tips I have given the children!

  • Make sure you have a book you like and keep it with you – home and school
  • Read anywhere – the car is often a forgotten place to read or share stories
  • Trade reading out loud instead of completing a household job
  • Get your parents to read your book to you out loud
  • Read alongside your parents as they read their own books
  • Read every other page/paragraph/word alternatively
  • Log everyone’s reading progress on the fridge – who has read the most books this year?
  • Ask your parents what they are reading and what they liked reading when they were little

I look forward to giving out lots of house points. The scheme will run weekly (from one library session to the next) until the end of term, house points can only be rewarded if the reading record is signed AND brought along to the library session.
