Parents Put to the Phonics Test
This week it was the parents’ turn to enjoy their very own phonics lesson in Reception. Parents joined us for a phonics workshop to learn more about how children are taught to read and write at school through the Read Write Inc programme.
During the session parents practised using pure sounds to support blending and reading activities and met everyone’s favourite friend Fred Frog who can only talk in sounds.
We also talked about the importance and magic of sharing stories together at home. Just a few minutes each day reading with your child can make a huge difference to their progress as well as helping them develop a love of books and stories. Parents were encouraged to let children see them writing too, whether that is making a shopping list, jotting down a note or writing a card, so children can understand the real-life purpose and usefulness of writing.
Another important part of early literacy development is strengthening the muscles needed for writing. Fine motor activities such as Play Dough, Lego, threading and using tweezers all help build hand strength and control, which in turn support children when they begin forming letters and writing with confidence.
It was a real pleasure to welcome parents into the classroom and to share in this special part of the children’s reading and writing journey. Thank you so much to everyone who came along, joined in with such enthusiasm and showed such support for your child’s learning.
