Frozen? Not for Long…

This week, Year 1 had an exciting visit to the Science Lab to explore what happens when salt is added to ice.

We began by examining ice that had been frozen inside balloons. The children ran their fingers over the hard, smooth surfaces and shared ideas about how we might make the ice melt more quickly.

They were fascinated to discover that sprinkling salt onto ice causes it to melt. Carefully, they added salt to their ice balloons and watched as cracks and crevices began to form. Using pipettes, the children then dripped food colouring onto the ice and observed how it flowed into the tiny fissures created by the salt — turning the ice into a colourful, scientific artwork!

Well done, Year 1 — super scientists in action!
