Kindy’s Butterfly Life Cycle Discovery
In Kindy, we have continued our life cycle theme by looking more closely at butterflies, linking our learning to activities in Forest School.
-
We explored the stages: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis (specific to butterflies), and butterfly.
-
We talked about metamorphosis and how it takes around two weeks.
-
The children learned that caterpillars eat plant material, while butterflies have a liquid diet.
-
They use a proboscis to feed on nectar and even drink from muddy puddles to absorb minerals and salts.
-
Interestingly, butterflies can taste using their feet!
-
We looked at how butterflies are symmetrical and decorated templates using symmetry.
In EYFS, we read The Case of the Missing Caterpillar and then flew around the fire circle like butterflies!
