Teacher of Design Technology (part-time with possibility of full-time)
Permanent
September 2025
This is an exceptional opportunity for a new Teacher of Design Technology to join a flourishing boarding and day school, set on an attractive 100-acre campus and in a beautiful part of rural Surrey. The School is thriving; there is a sense of excitement, purpose and development everywhere in a School that is on a clear upward trajectory. There may be the opportunity to bring the role up to or close to full-time by adding some hours of work in support of the department’s provision but this is not essential.
The successful candidate will have a passion for design, with the creative, practical and technical skills to kindle and develop that same spark in others. They will play a key role in building our academic profile and take particular, shared responsibility for developing the creative, imaginative and practical aspects of a well-rounded education. This is an exciting time for King Edward’s there is a sense of excitement, purpose and development everywhere in a School that is on a clear upward trajectory.
Design Technology is a high-profile department situated in the heart of the academic campus in a newly refurbished, spacious building with three large workshops, one of which is dedicated to metal work. As well as the workshops there are two graphics rooms and an IT room. There is the usual range of hand and power tools, with extensive CAD provision (laser cutter, CNC router, vinyl cutter and a suite of 3D printers). Younger pupils have one lesson per week throughout the year, and we aim to cover 3 projects each year. At GCSE we follow the AQA Design and Technology course and at A level the AQA Product Design course. We host several after-school clubs and pupils often drop in after school to work on their projects.
The post requires willingness and ability to teach across KS3, GCSE and A level courses; a familiarity with AQA specifications would be particularly valuable. The post also involves hosting after-School activities according to the successful candidate’s interests and aptitudes, at least one of which would be DT-related.
King Edward’s School is a co-educational boarding and day 11-18 school for some 475 pupils, around 30% of whom are full boarders. We are an HMC school and proud of our unique heritage and place among British co-educational independent schools.
In return, we offer a rewarding environment, as well as a number of notable benefits such as substantially reduced school fees at King Edward’s, Barrow Hills and Longacre Schools, free school lunches, free on-site parking, use of our schools’ gym and pool facilities & competitive rates of pay.
