Year 1 Trip to Alice Holt

The Year 1 children had a wonderful trip to Alice Holt for a sensory forest experience.

They took part in a range of activities, from finding natural items in the forest that exactly matched the shade of a number of fabric swatches to making ‘forest perfume’. They explored the sense of touch with a ‘Meet a Tree’ activity in a small beech wood, where one child in each pair wore a blindfold and was led carefully to a tree, which they examined with their fingertips. After being led away and spun around a few times, the child removed their blindfold and had to identify ‘their’ tree from the many surrounding them.

After a picnic lunch, the children thought about the forest from the point of view of various animals living in the trees, acting out short stories read aloud by an adult with small finger puppets. To end the day, the children took a long sensory walk through the forest, stopping to examine interesting finds along the way, and rolling balls down the enormous wooden marble runs. It was a truly wonderful day, or as the children exclaimed, “Best trip EVER!!”
