Welcome to the Barrow Hills Bulletin, your weekly newsletter with a snapshot of life at School.

Message From the Head

Dear Parents,

Sports Day Poster

I’m sure many of you will have read, with interest, the letter this week from the Treasurer of the Royal Bridewell Foundation outlining our future plans. For those who may have missed the Q&A webinar on Thursday, please do speak with me if you have any questions.

Notable this week was Year 4 and their very successful science expedition to Winchester. Eyewitness accounts spoke of the focus, energy and outstanding manners of the BHS crew. A welcome break in the weather also allowed fixtures to go ahead, with netball and hockey played on Wednesday. Overall, our teams have been absolutely undeterred by everything the January weather has thrown at them. These really are ‘free-range’ children, showing resilience and strong team spirit.

Playing hard and working hard, Year 8 will be sitting a set of mock examinations next week. These are an important opportunity to practise study skills and to build confidence over time. The preceding two cohorts have raised the bar on our academic record, and I know the current group will be aiming equally high.

On the theme of working hard, we have just completed another of our routine deep dives into pupil perceptions and views, covering areas from learning disposition to health and relationships. Overall, these are very happy children. We did note that some pupils report a lack of sleep and feelings of tiredness. In many cases, this appears to coincide with pupils telling tutors that they are gaming or using technology into the evenings. A gentle reminder, therefore, of the value of switching off at night, perhaps in favour of a good book.

Finally, on the theme of happy children, my thanks again to Year 3 for the wonderful assembly they presented on Thursday – Seven Ways of Gratitude. It was just lovely to hear such thoughtful and considered kindness.

Warm regards,
Mr Towers, Head

News from Upper Prep

It has been a very wet and stormy week at Barrow Hills but the children in Upper Prep have continued to impress me with their energy and enthusiasm across all areas of the curriculum.

At our Open Day last Friday I was so proud of the way the children in Year 7 and Year 8 took on the role of Tour Guides, showing visitors around our school. Others took the lead in lessons, explaining their art work or how to use the VR headsets. All the children were very polite and knowledgeable and the parents were extremely complimentary about their behaviour, their confidence and their love of learning.

The children in Year 8 have continued to prepare for their mock examinations next week. They will sit a full raft of papers in all academic subjects in preparation for their final CE 13+ exams in June. They will need to bring a fully charged chrome book (if they are allowed to type) and a pencil case containing at least two blue ink pens, a pencil and ruler, plus any maths equipment they may need, including a scientific calculator! These items should be in a clear pencil case if possible. Children will also need a reading book in case they finish the exam early. They may also bring a water bottle and some revision notes as there are some revision slots during the school day.

I know all the staff will join me in wishing all the children the very best of luck!

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Best wishes,
Mrs Mason, Head of Upper Prep

News from Prep

Having reached the end of January, the lighter mornings and evenings are bringing renewed enthusiasm to all the children, and the staff!

Earlier in the week, Year 4 enjoyed a fantastic visit to the Winchester Science Museum. The children explored a range of interactive exhibits, took part in hands-on investigations, and learned more about space, engineering, and how science shapes the world around us. They were a credit to the school throughout the day, and I was delighted to hear that the tour leader specifically commented on their excellent behaviour, curiosity, and thoughtful questions. Well done to all of them for representing Barrow Hills so proudly.

I have also very much enjoyed spending time visiting lessons across the Prep Department this week. It is wonderful to see how settled the children are, how positively they are working together, and how confidently they are tackling new challenges. There is a real sense of purpose in classrooms, alongside plenty of enthusiasm and enjoyment for learning.

On Thursday, Year 3 presented a lovely class assembly, and what a pleasure it was to watch them speak and perform with such confidence in front of a large audience. Standing up to share learning takes great courage at this age, and they should be extremely proud of how clearly and confidently they communicated. It was a delightful showcase of their hard work and growing self-belief.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support, and I wish you all a relaxing weekend.

Kind regards,
Miss Tyrrell, Head of Prep

News from Pre-Prep

Reception enjoyed their science lab experience earlier this week when they visited Mr Behan, our Head of Science, as part of their learning about oral health. The children enjoyed exploring two very different skulls and their teeth. One was from a deer, and the other from a cat. The children looked at the different types of teeth these animals had and learned that their teeth are linked to the types of foods they have in their diets.

A heartfelt thank you to Receptions’ parents for joining the children last Friday for their penguin crafts sale. I am delighted to confirm that they did manage to raise enough money to sponsor a penguin! Well done Reception class.

Congratulations to Louis (Kindy), Alice (Rec), Anabella (Year 1) and Matthew (Year 2) who were each awarded Work of the Week in assembly this morning. Hugo (Year 1) earned his Silver Award for his house point collection and Mia, Matthew and Rocco (Year 2) achieved their Gold Awards. There were some further special awards this morning. Sophie, Arthur and Matthew received a Head’s Commendation for their expert coding skills in Computing, and Kit (Year 2) was presented with a Special Commendation  for his Maths – very well done to all of you. Next Thursday is Year 2’s Roman Day! Don’t forget you are welcome to come to school dressed in togas or dressed as Roman centurions or as Roman emperors (be as creative as you wish)! Next Wednesday we are very excited to host our first Tree Tots session here at Barrow Hills. Babies and toddlers from 6 months to 3 years are warmly welcomed from 9 – 10am, so do tell your friends with little ones. On Friday, Reception will celebrate Number Fun Day, and the children are invited to dress up as a number or something number related.

Wishing you a lovely weekend.
Mrs Barnett, Head of Pre-Prep

The classes will meet every Wednesday at 9am during term-time – the first two classes will be free to attend, or £5 thereafter, and include a hot drink and snack for both carers and their little ones!
Please do bring along any children and spread the word with friends – tickets must be booked in advance, through the Happity website
