Learning About Motor Cars in Year 1

This week the children in Year 1 have been learning about the history of the motor car. We looked at early cars, such as Cugnot’s steam driven carriage, through the Baker electric car, Ford Model T, Beetles, Minis and on to modern day cars.

The children were very interested to learn about fossil fuels, how they are a finite resource, and that alternative ways of powering cars are being explored. They were knowledgeable about the impact on the environment and that there are an increasing number of electric cars now on the roads. The children then had a go at junk modelling their own cars from boxes, straws and masking tape. There was an enormous range of designs on show – perhaps we have some engineers of the future in the class!

Well done Year 1,
Mrs Harris and Mrs Mullins
