Diwali, the Festival of Lights
This week, the children have loved learning all about Diwali, the Festival of Lights. We discovered that Diwali is a special celebration for many Hindu families, marking the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. It is a time when homes are decorated with beautiful lights and candles called diyas, families share delicious food, and fireworks fill the night sky.
The children have enjoyed listening to and acting out the story of Rama and Sita. They were fascinated by the character Ravana with his ten heads and twenty arms. The class have also looked at pictures and short clips showing how Diwali is celebrated around the world, and they were interested in the colourful decorations and joyful festivities.
We have been retelling the story in our own words, creating beautiful Rangoli patterns using a range of materials, and talking about the meaning of light and kindness in our own lives. It has been a thoughtful and creative week of learning and celebration.
