Nursery & Kindy STEM Week
It has been a hugely exciting week for all the children!
Our Book of the week is Rosie’s Walk. A simple story which lends itself incredibly well to discussions about positional language and farmyard features and animals. The children absolutely loved making their own farmyard maps and they worked really hard cutting out farmyard features and sticking them on the map.
In Maths we have learnt about shapes playing matching games and finding similar shapes in a cut and stick activity.
The Sound of the week has been ‘h’ and the children managed to think of some great objects that start with ‘h.’ They enjoyed having a go at drawing ‘h’ in their books and it’s wonderful seeing how proud they are of their achievements.
To celebrate STEM week, we made sure to have a relevant activity every day:
On Monday the children revisited melting ice with salt and squirting coloured liquid into the ice. Once again, the children were fascinated with the sounds, change in formation and beautiful patterns that were created in the ice. The Nursery enjoyed hammering the ice and melting it with water.
On Tuesday the children really enjoyed mixing skittles with water to see how the colours merged and mixed. We were also thrilled to meet the firefighters and have a look inside the fire engine. The main event was watching the huge jets of water from the hoses!
On Wednesday we enjoyed predicting if objects would float or sink. The children then made little boats with foam and coloured their own sails.
On Thursday the children met some very different visitors! We were fortunate enough to meet a collection of sweet hedgehogs. It is so unusual to see hedgehogs up close so this was a wonderful experience.
On Friday there was the grand finale of the mentos and coke explosion!
It has been a fun week full of curiosity, exploration and discovery, and all the children loved experimenting and learning through play.
