Year 1 Explore Absorbent Materials

The children in Year 1 have been discussing what ‘absorbency’ means and thinking about which materials are absorbent. We thought about where the liquid goes when it is absorbed into a paper towel.

The children then carried out an experiment to see how water is absorbed. First, they drew patterns on a circle of filter paper with felt tipped pens. Then they carefully put the ‘wick’ of the filter paper into a cup of water. After a tense wait, the water moved up the wick and was absorbed by the filter paper, pushing the ink to the edges of the circle.
