STEM Week in Reception
The week started on Monday with an inspirational visit from Mrs Wood, Toto’s mum. She talked to the children about some amazing robots that use AI to help people. The children were fascinated to hear about all the incredible things robots can do. They were set a challenge to design their own robots to help people, and their ideas were brilliant! Some designed breakfast robots with cereal shooters, others made robots to fill cars with petrol that needed hands to hold the pump and eyes to see how much petrol was going in, and some made tidy-up robots with grabbers to put toys away. A few children even made models of their robots using construction materials and junk modelling. A big thank you to Mrs Wood for sharing her time and knowledge with us.
On Tuesday, we were very lucky to have a visit from the Surrey Fire Service. The children loved seeing the fire engine and trying out some of the equipment themselves, especially the hoses! They were amazed by how powerful the water spray was and asked lots of interesting questions while learning how STEM is part of the firefighters’ jobs.
Over the winter, the children have been looking after bulbs they planted in the autumn. Now it’s spring, and the bulbs are flowering! The children have been learning all about daffodils and other spring flowers. They’ve been observing the flowers carefully, noticing parts like the petals, stems, leaves, and trumpet shapes. They have been naming the different parts, making careful observational drawings, and comparing different types of daffodils to see how they are similar and different. The children have also enjoyed spotting daffodils all around the school in different flower beds, noticing how they grow in different places and how the flowers change as spring progresses.
To finish the week, we had a visit from the Hedgehog Man, who taught us some really interesting facts about hedgehogs. The children were fascinated and asked thoughtful questions to find out more.
What a lovely STEM Week! The children have been so engaged, curious, and inspired by all the activities.
Well done, Reception!
