Message From the Head

Dear Parents,

Sports Day Poster

A week of formative assessment for our Year 7 and 8 pupils, who have been taking their formal exams (mocks for Year 7). Whilst only a handful of public schools (such as Charterhouse) require incoming pupils to sit Common Entrance assessments, we continue to maintain these examinations at Barrow Hills as they provide a clear academic target, with different levels to aspire to. The Common Entrance curriculum also helps sustain the academic rigour that underpins our broad and ambitious program, preparing children of all abilities to thrive at senior school and go on to achieve strong GCSE outcomes. In short: low stakes, high cognitive gains. I am expecting another impressive set of results, with a healthy collection of A and B grades.

Year 2 enjoyed some excellent cricket fixtures this week and, with a return to Forest School, managed to get outdoors between the thunderstorms. A proper deluge is always enjoyed by the children, who seem far less concerned about getting wet than most adults!

Sadly we had to cancel Proms this year, however we will look to create opportunities for some of the performances to feature within upcoming events and hope to capture others on film for you to enjoy.

Please do keep an eye on the calendar, as there are many events and occasions to look forward to over the coming weeks.

Mr Towers, Head

It has been a much quieter week in Upper Prep than usual as all the children have been engaged with exams! I am so proud of the focus and resilience they have shown. I know Year 8 are looking forward to their fabulous post CE programme of activities which starts on Monday with a trip to Thorpe Park… Year 7, it will be your turn next year!

Next week sees French speaking and listening exams for Year 7, and also their Evening of Music and Drama on Tuesday June 9th at 7pm.

On Friday June 12th the Upper Prep children plus Mr Smith, Mr Unwin and I depart for Barcelona in the early hours of the morning. There will be no news from me next Friday – but lots on our return on Tuesday June 16th!

Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs Mason, Head of Upper Prep

News from Prep

After the half term heatwave, we certainly came back to Earth with a very soggy bump this week! However, the weather did not diminish the spirits of the children who have conducted themselves admirably, quickly adapting to cancelled sports matches, sudden downpours and indoor break times, all the while ensuring they tiptoed and whispered their way around the school so as not to disturb the Upper Prep children who have been sitting their CE exams (and mock exams).

In the Prep department, we have also been hard at work with our Quest Tests taking place this week. The children have approached these with a maturity and sense of composure which highlight that they absolutely are being prepared for greater things. Well done!

Thank you to everyone who supported the BHPA’s clothing drive this week – you were so generous. All monies raised will go towards supporting The Halow project.

On Thursday, we welcomed author Patrick Gallagher, who talked to children in Years 4, 5 and 6, about his “Transcendent” series of books. The children then had the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session and some games. They were fascinated to learn all about Patrick’s journey and the writing process – it was lovely to witness the children’s engagement, and we hope it has inspired some of our own budding writers to action!

Next week we have our whole school photograph on Thursday – please could all the children remember blazers, smart school shoes and their best smiles!

Have a restful weekend,
Miss Tyrrell, Head of Prep

News from Pre-Prep

Our Reception and Year 1 children have been enjoying Forest School sessions together this term, providing valuable opportunities for learning, friendship, and personal growth in our woodland environment. Forest School continues to be a wonderful way for our children to grow together, fostering a strong sense of community, inclusion, and wellbeing that benefits them both inside and outside the classroom.

Our Year 1 children were very excited on Wednesday afternoon to climb the main staircase to visit their Year 2 classroom and teachers from September. They joined Mrs James to create beautifully colourful stained glass like designs for the window. They also explored their new cloakroom upstairs.

Despite the thunderous downpours on Tuesday afternoon, Year 2 travelled to Pennthorpe for a cricket fixture (albeit indoors due to the flash flooding)! The children had a great afternoon and represented the school proudly before enjoying match tea and chatting with children from the opposition. Well done, Year 2.

Very well done to Hattie (Kindy), Evie (Rec), Sophie (Year 1) and Mia (Year 2) who all achieved Work of the Week certificates this morning. Toto, Ethan, Arnold and Isla (Reception) proudly earned their Gold Awards while Ariella (Year 1) was presented with her Platinum award. We were also able to present our first Duke Awards of the year. Congratulations to Hattie (Kindy) who has completed her Nano Duke and to big brother Alex (Year 1) who has received his Silver Mini Duke Award. Hattie and Alex have successfully recorded details of their many activities including swimming, cookery and den building,  and worked hard to achieve these awards. Well done.

In what is an exceptionally busy final few weeks of the year, Reception go off to Arundel Wetlands Centre on Monday morning for their very first school trip! It is also the whole school photo next Thursday. You will have received your invitation in this week’s comms to our end of year Pre-Prep summer Celebration on Thursday 25th June at 8:35am. We look forward to seeing you there.

Tree Tots at Barrow Hills

We’re thrilled to invite little ones into our Nursery and Forest School for a our weekly toddler class – Tree Tots @ Barrow Hills!

Tree Tots welcomes girls and boys aged 6 months – 3 years for a magical hour of play. Babies can relax in our baby sensory corner as toddlers take on themed activity stations – we’ll then all come together for songs, games and story time.

The classes will meet every Friday at 9am during term-time – the first two classes will be free to attend, (thereafter £5 per child), and include a hot drink and snack for both carers and their little ones!

Please do bring along any children and spread the word with friends – tickets must be booked in advance, through the Happity website.

Barrow Hills Parents’ Association

Bacon Butties were a welcome treat this morning, and helped raised £293.50. The Bacon Butty stall runs every Friday from 7:45am, serving a selection of delicious breakfast treats and hot drinks, and is a fabulous meeting point for everyone to catch up at the end of the school week.

A big thank you to everyone who donated clothes for the Second Hand Collection this week. We managed to raise £158.85 for The Halow project which was a total of 353kg!

Thanks to our amazing team and the community for your support!
