Message From the Head

Dear Parents,

Sports Day Poster

It has been a good final week of the half term, starting with Josh and Tom (Year 8) taking us to the IAPS National Debating Final where we competed against 11 other Prep Schools. We didn’t lift the cup, but it was a strong result for our first year in the competition. I was proud not only of how well they managed the debating, but also of how they proactively took the time to go and make friends with other teams from all over the country.

We also performed well in our Pentathlon with four other Prep Schools, enjoying the contest despite the weather and taking seven individual medals. More excellent performances were seen on Wednesday, with Years 2, 3 and 4 presenting a concert of individual and small-group instrumental and vocal pieces for parents.

Today, we finish on a high, with our alumna Hettie Whittington, a Yale scholar, running a hockey masterclass for some of our top players.

Enjoy the warm bank holiday weekend, and I hope the children can enjoy some rest over half term. Please do check the calendar, as there is a cornucopia of events in the second half of term.

Mr Towers, Head

News from Upper Prep

The last week before half term has been packed full of events, competitions, lessons and activities – as well as the odd thunderstorm!

On Monday, I was delighted to accompany Josh, Tom and Mr Towers to Merchant Taylor’s Prep school for the National IAPS Debating Finals. There were twelve teams from all over the country, with some schools travelling as far afield as York and Perth, Scotland. The boys spoke with great eloquence and confidence and were quick to make friends with children from other schools. Mr Towers and I were so proud of them.

On Tuesday, several children from Year 7 and Year 8 took part in our Barrow Hills Pentathlon. Well done to Reuben, Philip, Charlie, James H, Noah, Hermione and Delilah for representing our school so well and tackling all events with such enthusiasm!

The children have continued to prepare for their exams after half term by revising in their lessons. Teachers have given them lots of tips and tricks this week as well as past papers for the half term break to help them consolidate skills and knowledge. There are also a lot of resources on the Revision Google Classroom.  Mrs Goedkoop explained in the The Revision Workshop last week that revising little and often is the key! Can I also suggest that the children take some time to re-stock their pencil cases? They need at least two blue ink pens, two highlighters, two pencils, maths equipment and a scientific calculator.

The week ended on a real high with our House Music Competition. It was such a joyful event with each house singing with confidence and happiness. I was so proud to see our Heads of Houses take the lead and support the younger children.

Finally, we were lucky enough to welcome Old Barrow Hillian, Hettie Whittington, back to Barrow Hills on Friday to deliver a hockey masterclass and also a superb ‘Question and Answer’ session with our Upper Prep Children. Thank you Hettie for giving up your time to talk to us!

I wish you all a peaceful and happy half term break. Enjoy the sunshine!

News from Prep

It’s been quite an active final week of the half term, and I am sure the children are all very ready for a well earned break! Early in the week, we held the much anticipated Barrow Hills Pentathlon. Four local schools were invited to participate and, despite the inclement weather, they soldiered on and performed admirably. Particularly heartening to witness was the encouragement all the children gave, not only to their own team mates, but also to those competing from other schools. Superb!

Moving from the sports field to the concert hall, Years 3 and 4 (with a special mention to Pre Prep’s Year 2!) showcased a wealth of talent, with some lovely vocal and instrumental performances at Wednesday’s Music Concert. Thank you, Mrs Davies, for such dedication, and to our peripatetic music teachers for stretching our young musicians.

Today we welcomed Old Barrow Hillian, Hettie Whittington, to deliver a Hockey Masterclass for some of our hockey players in Years 5 and 6. Hettie attends the prestigious Yale University, where she has earned a Hockey Scholarship. It was a great opportunity for the children to see where dedication to a skill can take you. Thank you, Hettie, for a fabulous morning!

This morning also saw the final of the House Music competition. The children across our three Houses, Kean, Murtough, and McCormack, were presented with a selection of songs from the 1950’s, and they voted for the ones they wanted to perform. Following several weeks of practice, it was a fun and raucous event, with some real Rock and Roll classics performed with gusto!

The weather next week looks sublime, so I will wish you all a wonderful week off, and look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday 1st June for the final half term of the school year!

News from Pre-Prep

We have had another wonderful week, filled with learning, creativity, music, and teamwork. Earlier in the week our Pre-Prep Assembly focused on World Bee Day, where the children learned all about the important role bees play in helping plants and flowers grow. The Reception children were fantastic helpers for Mrs Rogers during the assembly and confidently acted out how pollen travels from flower to flower, helping plants to grow and produce fruit and seeds. Everyone enjoyed learning fun facts about bees and discovering why it is so important to protect them.

Year 2 had a very exciting visit to the Science Lab this week! Focusing on animal adaptation, the children looked at a selection of skulls including a pelican, badger and a cat, and compared them, discussing predators and prey. They asked thoughtful questions, observed carefully, and showed excellent curiosity throughout the session. It was wonderful to see Year 2 developing their confidence as young scientists while having lots of fun learning through discovery.

We were delighted to enjoy a wonderful music concert on Wednesday afternoon featuring performances from children in Years 2 to 4. The audience was treated to a range of musical talents including saxophones, recorders, guitars, violin, piano, singing and drumming performances. The children performed beautifully and showed great confidence, dedication, and enthusiasm. The practice most certainly pays off! We are incredibly proud of all the performers for sharing their hard work and talent with us.

This morning, children from Reception through to Year 8 came together for our House Music Competition. This year’s theme celebrated the 1950s as part of our special 75th Anniversary celebrations. The school was filled with music, energy, and enthusiasm as each house (children and staff) performed together. The event was a wonderful opportunity for all of our children to collaborate and celebrate together as a whole school community. With lively singing, actions and fantastic performances, it was a joyful morning enjoyed by everyone.

Congratulations to Elodie (Kindy), Isla (Reception), Evie (Year 1) and Rocco (Year 2) who each received Work of the Week certificates in assembly this morning. Gold Awards were presented to Freddie, Oliver, Toto and Alice in Reception and to Hugo, Evie and Anabella in Year 1. Platinum Awards were also received by Arthur, Holly and Sophie in Year 2. Finally, each half term we award a child in Pre-Prep with the Playtime Award and this morning this went to Alice in Reception, who is always friendly and really tries to include others in her games – she is always happy and busy in our garden.

Wishing you all a wonderful half term break in the warm sunshine.
Mrs Barnett

We’re thrilled to invite little ones into our Nursery and Forest School for a our weekly toddler class – Tree Tots @ Barrow Hills!

Tree Tots welcomes girls and boys aged 6 months – 3 years for a magical hour of play. Babies can relax in our baby sensory corner as toddlers take on themed activity stations – we’ll then all come together for songs, games and story time.

The classes will meet every Friday at 9am during term-time – the first two classes will be free to attend, (thereafter £5 per child), and include a hot drink and snack for both carers and their little ones!

Please do bring along any children and spread the word with friends – tickets must be booked in advance, through the Happity website.

Barrow Hills Parents’ Association

Bacon Butties were a welcome treat this morning, and helped raised £315. The Bacon Butty stall runs every Friday from 7:45am, serving a selection of delicious breakfast treats and hot drinks, and is a fabulous meeting point for everyone to catch up at the end of the school week.
