Conservation Competition

Our STEM Week, centred on flora and fauna with a strong conservation theme, brought science to life across the school and inspired curious minds of all ages.

The highlights of the week included:

Monday: Engineer and conservation enthusiast Brian Middleton led a lively, hands‑on workshop on the paramotor technology featured in Sacha Dench’s Flights of the Swans. He also judged Year 8’s conservation competition — congratulations to our winner James H, who was awarded a family ticket to the WWT London Wetland Centre.

Thursday: Early Years were delighted by a hedgehog visit, while Upper Prep enjoyed an inspiring talk from guest speaker Tom Hickey on marine conservation and the challenges facing our seas.
Friday: Sacha Dench joined us for a memorable assembly about her conservation work and the Flights of the Swans project, followed by a Q&A session with parents. To round the week off we celebrated Pi Day with a special pie lunch, and Year 8 took part in the Charterhouse STEM Fair in the afternoon.

All week: classrooms and outdoor spaces buzzed with conservation activities – from plans for our oceans to debates surrounding bringing species back from extinction – helping pupils connect classroom learning with real‑world action.

Throughout the week we introduced pupils to the vital work of conservation organisations. If you’d like to continue the learning at home over the Easter break, the WWT London Wetland Centre (prize partner for our Upper Prep competition) is a wonderful place to explore wetlands, wildlife and conservation in action – do check their website for visiting information.

Thank you to our guest speakers, staff and pupils for making STEM Week such an engaging celebration of science and nature.
