Message From the Head

Dear Parents,

Sports Day Poster

We enjoyed a cracking bonfire and fireworks display last Friday – lots of smiles, sparkles and over £765 raised for the Parents’ Association. Many thanks to the key parent volunteers and staff who helped with the setup and tidy-up; it was well worth the effort.

Prep and Upper parent consultations rolled through this week, and the rain didn’t stop us from enjoying a range of football and hockey fixtures.

Our Remembrance Service on Tuesday was notable for the quality of reading from Year 8 and a truly moving performance from the choir.

We have also been reflecting on our culture of kindness and respect through Anti-Bullying Week and our Odd Socks fundraiser today, supporting national awareness. We’re proud to enjoy a community where 100% of our children told the recent school inspectors that they feel safe at school. The children don’t put up with any nonsense at Barrow Hills – they moderate themselves brilliantly (well, most of the time!).

As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child,” so let’s keep our community close and strong.

Mr Towers, Head

News from Upper Prep

It has been great to catch up with so many parents and children at our Parent Consultation evenings this week.  As staff, it is very useful to give specific feedback on what is going well and to share targets and next steps. Thank you for your support at home.  It is greatly appreciated and makes such a difference.

The Year 8 children continue to rehearse hard for their production of Shakespeare in Love which will be performed on December 4th at 7pm.  Please come along if you would like to see what our oldest children can do!  I am so proud of all the effort the children have put into this challenging – and very funny! – play, and I know you will be very impressed with their performance.

Peer Mentor training started last week and children from both Year 7 and Year 8 have begun to learn how to support the younger children.  I have been most impressed with their thoughtful comments and their willingness to learn to be good listeners!

Tom and Alfie from Year 8 enjoyed listening to some of the children from Year 5 read during their library lesson this week.  It was lovely to see the boys sharing books in this way and there was a lot of book related chat!  Well done boys!

It was such a pleasure to hear the Year 8 children, Charlie, Delilah, Dylan , Mateo, Philip and Henry read with such confidence and gravitas in our Remembrance Service.  Also, thanks should go to the singers Bertie, Elliot, Delilah and Josh who ended our service so beautifully.

Some dates for your diary:

Wednesday 19th NovemberThe Court of Bridewell, including the Lord Mayor and Aldermen of the City of London, have invited our Year 8 children to showcase our new Bridewell AI system in action and to be guests at Guildhall.

Mrs Mason, Head of Upper Prep

News from Prep

We began the week with a beautiful and poignant Remembrance Service on Monday, where the Bridewell Choir sang beautifully and with real heart. I was particularly impressed by the respect and focus shown by all the children in the congregation – it was a very moving way to reflect on the importance of remembrance and community.

Today, we celebrated Odd Socks Day, a key part of our ongoing Anti-Bullying Week. The children enjoyed expressing their individuality and celebrating difference, while also engaging in thoughtful discussions around kindness, respect, and inclusivity. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and creativity, all while reinforcing these important values.

This week also saw parent consultations for Years 3 and 4, providing a great opportunity for teachers and parents to connect, share progress, and discuss targets and aspirations for the children. We very much look forward to continuing this process with Years 5 and 6 next week, ensuring all parents have the chance to be fully involved in their child’s learning journey.

Thank you as always for your support, and I hope you all enjoy a lovely weekend.

Kind regards,

Amber Tyrrell

News from Pre-Prep

This week was a poignant one as all of our Pre-Prep children engaged in various remembrance-themed activities, showing great respect and understanding for their years. I was incredibly proud of how well our Year 1 and Year 2 children listened respectfully in our school remembrance service on Tuesday morning, sitting so well and showing real understanding and care during this special time of reflection.

The poppies on display in the chapel had been designed by our DT department and then decorated beautifully by our Nursery children. Kindy made and painted their own poppies too and showed the rest of Pre-Prep at their assembly which took place later on Tuesday morning. Pre-Prep looked at photographs of King Charles laying his wreath at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday and we were also fortunate enough to see the uniform of two parents from the school, one from the Army and the other one from the Navy. To finish a week of commemorations, we were very lucky to welcome Alex and Hattie’s Daddy to school this morning to speak to the children in Hattie and Alex’s classes about his role as a Doctor in the Navy.

Year 1 were in the science lab earlier this week with our Head of Science, Mr Behan. The children took part in a Science quiz with Year 7 who were suitably impressed with many of the children’s responses, much to Mrs Harris and Mrs Platt’s delight.

It was great for staff to meet with our parent community last week during our autumn term parent consultations. We hugely value partnerships and open communication, and these meetings truly help to further align school and home efforts to enhance learning, wellbeing, and confidence.

Congratulations to Evie (Reception), Evie (Year 1) and Sammy (Year 2) who each received Work of the Week certificates in assembly this morning. Evie made some very thoughtful contributions to Reception’s discussions around remembrance, while Evie has been working brilliantly on her Read Write Inc. Red Words and Sammy’s imaginative and descriptive Magic Box poetry was commended. Well done also to Arnold, Alice and Ethan (Reception) who each achieved their Bronze certificates.

Next Friday Year 2 have a football fixture scheduled and should remember to bring both their shin pads and football boots for their sports lessons during the week.

Have a good weekend.

Mrs Barnett

Music lesson timetables are published every Friday via the School Portal. While our music teachers endeavour to attend on their designated days, there may be occasions when adjustments are necessary. We kindly ask parents to check the published timetables each week to ensure that students bring their instrument and music to school on the correct day.
