Beautiful Boats in Year 1

This week in our ‘Travel and Transport’ topic, we have moved from ‘Amazing Animals’ to ‘Beautiful Boats’.

We looked at the development of boats over time, from early dugout canoes and Egyptian reed boats, through sailing ships to modern day speed boats, ferries and hovercrafts. We discussed how each type of boat moves on the water and what sort of travel and transport they are best suited to. After an exercise in which the children sorted various different boats into the order in which they were invented, they then had great fun making their own ‘sailing boats’ out of floats, straws and paper.
