Barrow Hills Readathon
A big thank you to our lovely Year 2 Classroom Assistant, Mrs Ferris, who spotted that the British Library was hosting a special live event last Friday with Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler to launch their new book. Along with hundreds of other schools from across the country, children from Years 1-3 gathered in the library and were enchanted as Julia, Axel and the rest of the cast acted out the much-loved story of The Gruffalo.
Julia then introduced everyone to her brand-new book, The Gruffalo Granny, reading the story while Axel’s wonderful illustrations appeared on the screen behind her.
The session finished with a very special drawing activity. Axel and Julia each had a turn at drawing the Gruffalo Granny, while the children followed along and created their own versions too.
You’ll never guess whose drawing looked most like the illustrations in the book… Axel’s, of course!
This wonderful event was also a lovely introduction for some of our children to the Read for Good Readathon, which launched across the school this Monday. All the children have now received a sponsor form, information card and bookmark, which have hopefully made their way out of school bags and home to you.
As explained in last Tuesday’s comms, please encourage the children to read anything, anywhere! Every bit of reading counts, whether it is a favourite book, comic, magazine, recipe, fact book or something completely new.
And we are already off to a fantastic start, with £50 raised so far! Thank you to everyone who has already supported us. You can donate here.
