Victorian Tea Party

As the culmination of our Year 4 Victorian History topic, the children enjoyed a traditional Victorian tea party. Wearing a selection of Victorian-inspired hats from the school’s costume cupboard helped create the perfect Victorian atmosphere as they tucked into cucumber sandwiches, buttery shortbread biscuits and delicious Victoria sponge cake – a cake named after Queen Victoria herself and said to have been one of her favourites. To complete the celebration, the children enjoyed refreshing homemade lemonade, giving them a wonderful opportunity to experience a taste of what a Victorian afternoon tea might have been like.

After tea, our afternoon continued with a selection of traditional Victorian games. By this time, our History lesson had seamlessly become our French lesson, and we were delighted to be joined by Madame Early and Madame Burnett. Madame Burnett expertly explained the rules of hopscotch, quoits and Pin the Tail on the Donkey in French, giving the children a wonderful opportunity to practise their language skills in a fun and engaging way. Laughter and excitement filled the courtyard as the children embraced the challenge, encouraged one another and enjoyed the camaraderie of playing together. It was a fitting end to our Victorian topic, bringing together history, language learning and plenty of fun.
