Reception Become Forensic Investigators

This week, the children continued their learning about People Who Help Us, focusing on the important role of the police and the many different jobs they do to help keep us safe. We discussed how police officers support our communities, solve problems, and investigate crimes.

We were very excited to spend some time in the science laboratory with Mr Behan, where the children took part in some fascinating forensic investigations. They used ink pads to take their own fingerprints and carefully examined the patterns to discover whether they were whorls, arches, or loops. The children also collected cheek cell samples and observed them under a microscope, giving them a closer look at some of the tiny building blocks that make each of us unique.

Through these investigations, the children learned that features such as our fingerprints, cells, and eyes are unique to us. We discussed how police officers and forensic scientists can use this evidence to help identify people and support investigations. The children were highly engaged throughout the, showing great curiosity and enthusiasm as they explored how science can help the police in their work.
