Careers Talk with Year 7 & 8
Last Friday, Mr Aspray and Mr King gave their time to speak to Years 7 and 8 about their careers.
Mr Aspray began by describing his early interest in rocks, which led him to study sciences and then Natural Sciences at University of Cambridge. He explained that his company focuses on identifying natural resources around the world. Pupils asked a range of thoughtful questions about geology and different types of rocks. We are delighted that Mr Aspray will be returning later this year to speak to the pupils in more detail about geology.
Mr King outlined a very different career path. After studying medicine, he became an orthopaedic surgeon in the Royal Navy. He spoke about the length of training required to become a surgeon and the responsibilities involved in the role. He also described life on a submarine, explaining the range of skills needed and the importance of understanding how the vessel operates. While he was unable to share specific details about his missions, he explained how crews must navigate carefully to avoid other submarines and ships. He concluded by outlining some of the ways pupils could gain a taste of military life, such as joining the cadet forces.
I am extremely grateful to both speakers for taking the time to share their experiences and for giving pupils a clear insight into two very different career paths. I hope that next year more parents will be willing to talk to the pupils about their own careers and professions.
Merci beaucoup
Madame Early
