Welcome to the Barrow Hills Bulletin, your weekly newsletter with a snapshot of life at School.

Message From the Head

Dear Parents,

Sports Day PosterWe had a great turnout on Wednesday for the launch of our bigger, stronger and better Parents’ Association. Many parents signed up to join the committee and/or volunteer with community events. We will hold another meeting after half term to keep up the momentum, and we’ll share details with you in advance.

We will also arrange a catch-up session for Year 5 and 6 parents who were unable to attend our Life at the Top seminar this week. Year 4 parents are welcome too, as there has been much interest in looking ahead. This will take place on Wednesday 15th October at 8.30am in the Chapel – this is a great opportunity to explore the Year 7 and 8 offer with staff, current pupils and recent alumni.

Finally, thank you for your generous support with our Harvest collection. It is good to support our local food bank, but it also underlines that, as a charity ourselves, these ethical endeavours are an important part of who we are as a community.

News from Upper Prep

As always, it has been a very busy and active week in Upper Prep.

On Monday evening, we hosted our Life at the Top Evening – a special opportunity for parents and children to discover what makes Years 7 and 8 at Barrow Hills such an important and rewarding stage of school life.
Guests heard from staff, pupils, and parents about the many benefits of staying with us for these formative years. A real highlight was listening to some of our current Year 8s – Dylan, Delilah, and Henry – who spoke with great enthusiasm about the experiences they’ve enjoyed in Upper Prep so far.

We were also delighted to welcome back some familiar faces. Former pupils George and James (now thriving at KESW), and Emilia (now at Charterhouse), shared how well Upper Prep prepared them for the step into senior school, both academically and socially. Edith, now in Year 10 at KESW, also reflected on her very positive journey through Years 7 and 8.

Adding a parent’s perspective, Marja – mum to Hugo, Tess, Philip, Ben, and Mia – spoke about the valuable role Upper Prep has played in shaping her older children’s success.
The evening rounded off with heartfelt video messages from alumni Julien and Bethany, both of whom left in 2018 but still carry fond memories of their time at Barrow Hills. And this is just the beginning – keep an eye out for more alumni stories in the weeks ahead!

We will be repeating Life at the Top on Wednesday October 15th at 8.30am so please join us if you missed it.
Year 8 have enjoyed reading WW1 poetry this week. I attended a very interesting online GCSE poetry course on Wednesday afternoon and I can’t wait to bring some of the ideas into class next week to extend and support the children and hopefully, make poetry even more exciting and accessible. The techniques they learn in Year 7 and Year 8 can be used all the way through their school journey – right up to A level.

I have been very impressed with the kind and helpful behaviour of the children in Year 7 and Year 8 during our very sunny break times this week. Thank you to Oscar, Charles and Eddie who spent their break playing with the younger children and helping them build structures with the new construction kit. Thank you also to Dylan, Henry, Tom and Philip who played football with some of the Year 3, 4 and 5 children – even teaching them how to take a penalty! It is great to see our older children supporting the younger ones in this way.

Finally, our School Council has been particularly active this week. Our Head Boy, Dylan and Head Girl, Delilah, plus our Upper Prep representatives, Henry and Bertie, attended a meeting with our catering team to give some feedback about the school food. Thank you all for representing the views of Upper Prep so clearly!

Some dates for your diary:

Wednesday October 15th : Life at the Top in the chapel at 8.30am.

Best wishes,

Mrs Mason, Head of Upper Prep

News from Prep

This week has been a particularly busy and rewarding one in the Prep Department. The children have been undertaking routine assessments, and I must say how impressed I have been with the way they approached these. They demonstrated real focus, determination, and resilience – skills which will serve them well both in and out of the classroom.

We also held drop-in form teacher sessions for our transition years, 3 and 5. These were a valuable opportunity for parents to ask questions, clarify routines, and strengthen the partnership between home and school that is so important in supporting the children during times of change. Thank you to all who attended and contributed to such productive sessions.

I am very excited to have introduced a new weekly award: the Head of Prep Star Award – or HOPstar for short! This award is designed to celebrate those children who go above and beyond, whether academically, personally, or in the way they contribute to school life.

Looking ahead, there is much to be excited about next week. Year 3 will be welcoming the History Man for a lively and interactive workshop on the Vikings, which promises to bring their topic to life in a truly memorable way. Year 6 will be heading off to Legoland, combining science-based learning with plenty of fun. And on Friday, we look forward to our Open Morning, a fantastic opportunity to showcase our wonderful school.

I wish you all a restful weekend.

Miss Tyrrell, Head of Prep

News from Pre-Prep

With ladybirds ambushing us this week in search of ideal hibernation spots around the school site, weakening sunlight and colder mornings, there is no doubt we’re suddenly into October and all things harvest! Harvest songs in music lessons and Pre-Prep Assembly, art work with Mrs Wheeler and the fantastic scare crow and farming display in Kindy heralded the theme of harvest this week. Our Harvest Festival assembly involving Kindy to Year 6 is  taking place on Thursday 9th October at 8:35am and parents are warmly invited to attend. There will be refreshments beforehand after drop off.

School Council met this week for their first meeting of the school year. After elections earlier in the term, it was girls representing Pre-Prep as Evie (Rec), Indy (Year 1) and Holly (Year 2) joined school council members from Year 3 to Year 8, and Miss Tyrrell, to discuss suggestions to improve snacks and school lunches.

It was great to see parents of Reception children attend our Phonics Workshop yesterday morning. Hopefully this was a helpful insight into how we deliver phonics teaching in Reception, and indeed across Pre-Prep, and that you are now increasingly familiar with some of the terminology and strategies around Read Write Inc. If you have any further questions regarding phonics teaching, please do not hesitate to contact us and we’ll be very happy to help. If you were unable to attend, the slides are now available on the Parent Portal.

A week today is Open Morning which is a wonderful opportunity to explore our school, meet our dedicated staff, and experience first-hand the nurturing environment we create for our young learners. If you or someone you know would be interested in finding out more about life at Barrow Hills from Reception and beyond, do register your interest with our registrar at https://www.barrowhills.org/admissions/visit-barrow-hills/open-mornings/

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Mrs Barnett, Head of Pre-Prep
