Message From the Head

Dear Parents,

Sports Day Poster

As the African proverb reminds us, “The young can run faster, but the old know the road.” With that in mind, we are delighted that our Pre-prep Grandparents’ Day is returning on 12th February, bringing a welcome sense of generational connection. The day will include a sing-along, tea and cake, and open classrooms. If grandparents are not available, we are very happy to welcome an aunt, uncle, or other important grown up. We are also reaching out once again to our local care home, where there are some wonderful older folk, often without nearby family, who greatly enjoy joining us and contributing to our wider sense of community cohesion.

On the subject of cohesion, we successfully navigated our busiest day of 2026 so far on Thursday. This included an external science competition and a robotics competition, both at Charterhouse, a theatre visit, and hockey fixtures – all running alongside the normal timetable. I’m not entirely sure how we managed it, but somehow it all worked.

Continuing the energy into Monday, we will be hosting a research visit from the Korean Ministry of Education, with 100 of their top teachers (along with four interpreters) coming to Barrow Hills and King Edwards Witley to look at excellence in UK digital education. In addition, we will be fielding a small collegiate team to a separate event at Google HQ in London to explore further cutting-edge collaborations with our local university partners. It feels a little like one of Mr P’s maths problems, but we will figure out the logistics!

The main thing, however, is that we continue to aim high with our community and educational ambition. On that note – stop press – the Barrow Hills Year 6 squad beat 20 other teams to win the Charterhouse VEX Robotics Competition!

Have a great weekend.

Warm regards,
Mr Towers, Head

News from Upper Prep

It has, as always, been a busy week in Upper Prep. Clubs began this week and the children signed up with their usual energy and enthusiasm. I have also been impressed with the resilience of the children in Year 8 as they prepare for their mock exams. Alongside their revision timetables and class work, they have been using knowledge organisers in form times to learn and test themselves on key facts. This is a really useful way of revising, as the children are all actively engaged but for only ten minutes at a time. Well done to all those Year 8 children who have been preparing for scholarship interviews and assessments. We wish you well!

Thank you to all the Upper Prep children who took part in the Swimming Gala on Tuesday. Our team of Hermione, Philip, Josh and Noah  were captained brilliantly by Henry C, and I know the sports staff were proud of you all as you battled fiercely against teams from Aldro and Amesbury.

Finally, all the children completed their wellbeing survey this week to see how they feel about school and their learning. This enables staff to support anyone who is struggling with any aspect of school life. Our survey last year revealed lots of happy, motivated children who love life at Barrow Hills, so I hope this year will be the same!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Best wishes,
Mrs Mason, Head of Upper Prep

News from Prep

It has been another busy and rewarding week at Barrow Hills, with a wonderful mix of learning opportunities, enrichment activities, and moments to celebrate the children’s enthusiasm and resilience.

On Tuesday, Year 3 enjoyed a delightful orchestral trip to Chichester, where they were introduced to live music in a professional setting. It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to experience the power of an orchestra first-hand and to deepen their appreciation of music beyond the classroom.

Thursday saw Year 6 take part in a robotics competition, where they demonstrated impressive teamwork, problem-solving skills, and perseverance. Events like these really help to bring STEM learning to life and allow pupils to apply their knowledge in exciting, real-world contexts.

This week, the children also completed a wellbeing survey, which provides us with valuable insight into how they are feeling about school life and helps us to continue supporting their emotional wellbeing alongside their academic development.

Today, Year 6 rounded off the week with a special treat, enjoying a French breakfast hosted by KESW. Not only was this a delicious way to practise their language skills, but also a lovely example of how cultural learning can be both educational and enjoyable.

Looking ahead to next week, we are expecting some important visitors on Monday, Year 4 will welcome the History Man on Wednesday to enrich their current topic, and we will host our Open Morning on Friday, where we look forward to showcasing our wonderful school community to prospective families.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. I wish you all a relaxing weekend before another exciting week ahead.

Kind regards,
Miss Tyrrell, Head of Prep

News from Pre-Prep

Year 2 were treated to an introduction to live music played by a full professional orchestra on Tuesday morning. They travelled to Chichester Festival Theatre to enjoy the Children’s concert, which featured musical classics, including an introduction to the orchestral instruments, a Disney medley and plenty of audience participation. The children represented the school beautifully and were able to tell me all about the different instruments they’d seen including the double bass, oboe and violins.

Clubs returned this week, with the introduction of a number of new clubs for the spring term. Lego Club and Imagination Club proved very popular; two new clubs for the term. There are still a few spaces in some clubs so if you are keen, do get in touch with Mrs Wood to enquire. If you attend Handwriting Club or Larks, this is an 8am start.

Congratulations to Alife (Kindy), Lockie (Rec), Parker (Year 1) and Alexander (Year 2) who all received Work of the Week awards in assembly this morning. Silver Awards were presented to Parker and Indy in Year 1, and to Alexander, Arthur, Austin, Holly, Sophie and Teddy in Year 2. Very well done to you all.

Have a great weekend,
Mrs Barnett, Head of Pre-Prep

Music Lesson Timetables

Music lesson timetables are published every Friday via the School Portal. While our music teachers endeavour to attend on their designated days, there may be occasions when adjustments are necessary. We kindly ask parents to check the published timetables each week to ensure that students bring their instrument and music to school on the correct day.

Early Morning Cross-Country Club

Barrow Hills Parents’ Association

Bacon Butties were a welcome treat this morning, and helped raised £200. The Bacon Butty stall runs every single Friday, serving a selection of delicious breakfast treats and hot drinks, and is a fabulous meeting point for everyone to catch up at the end of the school week.

On Friday 23rd January, we will be having a second hand uniform sale in the morning alongside our bacon butties (weather permitting)!

Thanks to our amazing team and the community for your support!
