Welcome to the Barrow Hills Bulletin, your weekly newsletter with a snapshot of life at School.

Message From the Head

Dear Parents,

Sports Day Poster

We hope to see many of you at our Welcome Back BBQ and Triathlon tomorrow.

As we mark our 75th birthday, and given the winds blowing through our sector and nation at present, this is a moment to pause, reflect, and share in our successes — and hopefully enjoy a bit of sunshine tomorrow too!

· 100% of your children achieved ‘Good’ or above in our Early Years assessments, compared with 66% nationally.

· From Year 2 to Year 8, 100% represented the school across 435 fixtures played last year.

· 100% took part in our annual Art Exhibition, performed in drama productions, and passed either Ballet or LAMDA exams, within the 5,600 lessons delivered.

· For those who stayed through to the top, 100% have passed Common Entrance exams over the last three years.

That is quite a journey to celebrate on our birthday.

This is a truly academic school — by that we mean a place full of bright, curious children and enthused specialist staff, all sharing a winning attitude towards learning and community. We are always asking: what’s the next question? what’s the next challenge?

In the coming years, this focus will be on what it means to be human — building the soft skills of courage, compassion, and curiosity that will count for a great deal.

Finally — and on the theme of community — our thanks go to one of our former families, whose departing gift to the school has enabled us to create an outdoor construction zone for the older children in the playground. A local carpenter has upcycled our hoard of old oak prayer benches into something that will bring a lot of joy to the children.

News from Upper Prep

It may only be the second full week back at school, but Upper Prep have already leapt into action with their usual energy! Despite the gloomy weather, the children in Year 7 and Year 8 have been throwing themselves into lessons, activities, and new challenges with real enthusiasm.

Year 8 are already hard at work rehearsing for their upcoming production of Shakespeare in Love. On December 4th, our very own hall will be transformed into The Rose Playhouse, and it promises to be a magical evening! Some of our actors have even begun learning their lines already — what commitment! Meanwhile, Year 7 are diving headfirst into the world of Macbeth during drama lessons, and I’ve been blown away by the creativity and flair in their performances.

Our House Captains have also impressed me this week, showing great leadership as they bring their house boards to life with colourful decorations. It’s been just as heartening to watch older pupils guiding and encouraging the younger ones at break times, where the new wood and tyres in the playground have sparked all sorts of imaginative play. The wood — upcycled from our old kneelers, thanks to a generous donation from the family of an ex-Barrow Hillian— has already inspired den-building and some very ambitious structures.

And now for some dates not to be missed:

Saturday 20th September – Join us for our BBQ and Triathlon as we also celebrate a very special milestone: Barrow Hills’ 75th birthday! Triathlon registration opens at 9.45am — don’t forget bikes, swimming costumes, and towels!

Monday 22nd September – Future Schools Evening

Monday 29th September – Life at the Top Evening (6pm, in the chapel)
Wishing you all a restful and happy weekend!

News from Prep

It has been another busy and productive week here at Barrow Hills. Our School Council representatives have now been elected, and we look forward to seeing them take on their new responsibilities with enthusiasm. Our Head Girl and Head Boy will chair these meetings, guiding discussions and supporting their peers. Their very first task is to help coordinate our Harvest Appeal, so please do look out for the list of requested items that was sent out on Tuesday—any contributions you are able to make will be gratefully received.

I have very much enjoyed popping into different lessons this week to see how the children are getting on. It is clear that they have settled back into their routines with confidence and are already soaking up new knowledge with real eagerness. Watching their curiosity and commitment in action is always a joy.

Break times have been especially lively thanks to our new slope construction kitgiant chess set, and the revamped snakes and ladders. These have been a huge hit with the children, providing fun, teamwork and problem-solving opportunities in equal measure.

As the weather is beginning to turn, please could I remind you to ensure your child has a jumper or cardigan in school each day. May I also ask that all items of clothing are clearly named—we have already had a number of items go missing this term, and labelling really does help us reunite belongings quickly with their owners.

Thank you for your continued support, and I hope you all have a restful weekend.

Miss Tyrrell, Head of Prep

News from Pre-Prep

The children in Pre-Prep have begun practising their songs this week for Harvest Festival which perhaps comes as no surprise with the very autumnal feel we’ve suddenly been experiencing this week. The school’s Harvest Festival will take place on Thursday 9th October at 8:35am. Parents of pupils in Kindy to Year 6 are warmly invited to join us.

I have thoroughly enjoyed spending some time each afternoon with the Reception children. I have been so impressed with how quickly they have found their rhythm with the school day, embraced new clubs, volunteered for roles including School Council representative and organised themselves and their belongings. They were clearly ready for this new chapter of school life. Well done Reception class.

Thank you to those who joined us for the Nursery and Kindy Parents’ Information Morning on Wednesday. Mrs Taylor and Mrs Crisell were able to share details about the term and indeed the year ahead, as well as answer any housekeeping questions. If you were unable to join us and would be keen to find out what was covered, do get in touch with the team.

Congratulations to Josh (Rec), Annabelle (Year 1) and Luke (Year 2) who each received Work of the Week certificates today. There has been some wonderful singing in Reception during carpet time, excellent literacy skills in Year 1 and fantastic partitioning of numbers in Maths in Year 2. Well done to all of these children.

Tomorrow is, of course, our Triathlon event and 75th Anniversary Launch BBQ. We are all very excited about this celebration and look forward to seeing you there.

Have a lovely weekend.

Barrow Hills Triathlon

Please register on the fields at 9:45am for the event to start at 10am. Children need to bring a bike, helmet, swim wear and have comfortable exercise clothes to run and cycle their way through the course. Teams will be both Prep and Pre-Prep with staff in the water with the Pre-Prep children to help them through their swim.

From the Reverend James Radcliffe:

Good evening,

I hope this finds you well and a special welcome to those new to Barrow Hills.

From time to time and for those who would like to gather, I bring together a Bridewell Parents & Guardians’ prayer meeting. I have planned one for Thursday 2nd October from 8:15 – 8:55am at King Edward’s School, Witley. If coming in person, please do use the delicious Picadilly café beforehand to get your preferred drink and snack if wanted. Then meet at KES Reception between 8:00-8:10 to be signed in and the Chaplain will meet you there. Parents and guardians may alternatively join via ZOOM at the same time as the in-person meeting is taking place. The ZOOM details are below. If you have any further questions, please do get in touch: RadcliffeJ@kesw.org

Bacon Butties were a welcome treat on this foggy morning, and helped raise £153.17. The Bacon Butty stall runs every single Friday, serving a selection of delicious breakfast treats and hot drinks, and is a fabulous meeting point for everyone to catch up at the end of the school week.

Thanks to our amazing team and the community for your support!

BHCC Christmas Fundraising 2025

Children should be completing their Christmas card designs over the next week in school or bringing them home to complete.
Please check whether any make their way home for homework and if so complete and return to school.
All card design templates need to be returned to school by Monday 29th September.
Any cards received after this time cannot be processed.
Sample cards will then be sent home and orders placed before half term. This also allows us to raise the maximum money for the BHCC.

Thank you for your support.
