Exploring natural and human-made materials in Year 2

As part of our work on exploring natural and human-made materials, the children looked at the wordless picture book ‘Window’ by Jeannie Baker. The pictures show the changes to the view out of a window in the Australian bush over a twenty-four hour period. The view changes from a natural, wild section backing onto bush, to a small fenced back garden surrounded by a city that has grown up over the years.

The children were then tasked with creating two very different scenes from the book. First, they created the natural view of the bush, using only naturally-found materials in the school grounds. Then they recreated an industrial, city-scene in the classroom using only human-made materials.

There were some thoughtful discussions as the children worked.
