Upper Prep Academic Excellence

Preparing children to be confident, highly motivated, happy learners.

Committed to motivating our Upper Prep children to become broad and successful learners, we provide the opportunity to experience an extensive range of academic subjects, stretching, challenging and inspiring pupils to reach beyond their own expectations and encouraging them to discover their passion for achievement.

We encourage our children to become independent learners and take responsibility for and risks with their own learning under the careful guidance of their highly qualified and dedicated teachers. Offering high levels of individualised attention with small classes, we allow the time and space for positive relationships to be formed between our teachers and the children.

Our teaching incorporates the best of academic and creative practice and is delivered using state of the art technology. Our role as educators is to understand each child as an individual and provide support as they pursue their journey towards independence. We know each and every child well and offer targeted support where needed, whether this is supporting those with learning differences or extending the academically gifted.

Quite simply, we prepare children to be confident, highly motivated, happy learners and lay strong foundations for a lifelong love of learning and the best platform for their future growth.

We are so impressed with how Barrow Hills prepared our son for senior school. His new school has a reputation of being ‘an academic hot house’ but our son tells us that in all the subjects so far, he has previously covered all the material in Barrow Hills and sometimes in more depth (science and maths).

This is clearly not a recap as some of his classmates are encountering this material for the first time. This has meant he can throw himself into extra curricular activities and meet new friends rather than focusing on academically keeping up.”

As Head of Science and STEM Innovation Lead, I believe passionately in promoting a holistic view of the STEM subjects, drawing links between each domain through curriculum content and the frequent inclusion of current topics of interest within mainstream media.

My greatest privilege working with the children at Barrow Hills is to be able to travel with them on their journey of discovery as, through investigation, exploration, and discussion, they begin to make sense of the world around them.

Thomas Behan, Head of Science and STEM innovation

As Director of Teaching and Learning, I believe passionately in children receiving a well balanced education, in the core curriculum, sports, digital technologies, sustainability and being the best version of themselves possible

My greatest privilege working with the children at Barrow Hills is seeing so many happy children moving around the school, genuinely excited about their education
