Welcome to the Barrow Hills Bulletin, your weekly newsletter with a snapshot of life at School.

Message From the Head

Dear Parents

Welcome back to the second half of term, and a warm welcome to the new families joining us in Nursery, Reception, and Year 5 this week.

As a community, we have much to celebrate and engage with. Pre-Prep parent consultations took place this week, with Prep and Upper School consultations following next week. Today we look forward to our Bonfire and Fireworks event at 6pm (with food stalls) – always a joyous occasion, and one through which the Parents’ Association raises valuable funds. You may also notice our new portable Astro lights, kindly provided through parent donations, helping to illuminate proceedings.

Looking ahead to December, we have a mix of familiar and new events to keep our festive energy high. At Christmas, we hope to have some fun and, as a charity with a gently Christian ethos, to provide opportunities for spiritual reflection and for helping others in our community. Please do check the calendar, but for now, here are some key dates:

  • 29th November – Christmas Fair
  • 1st December – Christingle Service
  • 4th December – Pre-Prep Nativity
  • 4th December – Year 8 Production: Shakespeare in Love
  • 9th December – Carol Service
  • 10th December – Happily Ever After (Nursery and Kindy), Cats Grin Christmas Theatre (Nursery–Year 4) and Christmas Charity Colour Run (Year 5 and above)
  • 11th December – Christmas Jumper Day, Santa Claus Visit, and Christmas Lunch

On the immediate horizon, we have our Remembrance Service next Tuesday at 8.45 a.m, and parents are warmly invited to join us. Thank you to our Year 8 Captains for selling poppies in support of the British Legion.

Kind regards

Mr Towers, Head

News from Upper Prep

It has been lovely to welcome back the children in Year 7 and Year 8 this week and to hear about all the exciting things they have done over half term.

Rehearsals continue for the Year 8 production, Shakespeare in Love , on December 4th and I am delighted to say that these didn’t stop over half term! The drama captains, Delilah, Tom and George, accompanied me to Petersfield to visit The Youth Theatre Wardrobe where we chose some costumes for the show. This treasure trove of costumes stretches over three floors and we had great fun choosing outfits for everyone. We then enjoyed hot chocolate and a piece of cake in a local cafe.

On Wednesday, the whole cast came into school for a rehearsal – and Dominos pizza of course! – and it was very useful to have this time to run through the show. The cast also tried on their costumes. Thank you everyone for giving up a day of your half term. Only three weeks to go now so keep learning those lines!

Peer Mentor training began this week. This is an opportunity for the children in Year 7 and Year 8 to learn to be a buddy or a ‘Listening Ear’ for the younger children. It is something that has worked extremely well in the past and I know that the current Upper Prep children will enjoy helping those in Years 3-6.

Finally, I hope to see many of you at our Fireworks and Bonfire Night on Friday. Fingers crossed for dry weather!

Have a lovely weekend,

Best wishes,

Mrs Mason

Maths Workshop

As the evenings draw in, please do take extra care during pick-ups and drop-offs around the school site. With the darker afternoons now upon us, we want to ensure that everyone remains safe. A gentle reminder too that as the weather starts to turn, children should bring a navy blue coat to school each day. We aim to get them outside for playtimes and fresh air as much as possible, whatever the weather, and a warm, waterproof coat helps make that possible.

Those who have signed up for the Junior Duke programme have now received their booklets and challenges for the year ahead. It’s always wonderful to see the children embracing this opportunity to develop their independence, creativity, and problem-solving skills – I can’t wait to hear how they get on over the coming weeks.

Wishing you all a warm and happy weekend.

Miss Tyrell

News from Pre-Prep

The children and staff are well rested and showed how ready and excited they were this week to get back to routine and school life. From creative projects and productions to upcoming events, there’s plenty to look forward to as we head towards winter.

Mr Pretorius, Head of Maths, visited Year 1’s Maths lesson on Thursday morning where they were exploring 2D shapes. From singing and puzzles to discussions and creations designed with a range of 2D shapes, Mr Pretorius was really impressed with the children’s engagement and descriptions of the different shapes including their properties, and which shapes were the odd one out.

Congratulations to Lockie (Rec), Alex (Year 1) and Austin (Year 2) who were awarded Work of the Week at this morning’s awards assembly. This was Reception’s first time joining the rest of the school on a Friday morning for awards. There’s been wonderful progress with handwriting, counting objects in Early Years maths, and designs and modelling. Bronze Awards for house points were achieved by Oliver and Evie (Reception), Evie, Hugo and Annabella (Year 1), and Alexander, Arthur, Austin, Holly, Luke, Sophie and Teddy (Year 2). Well done to you all. Mr Towers presented Pre-Prep’s first Special Commendation of this year to Kit (Year 2) for his achievements in maths including how he explained his mathematical thinking to Mr Hinds.

This evening is our annual fireworks event. I look forward to seeing you there. Fingers crossed the rain stays away.

Have a good weekend.

Mrs Barnett

Barrow Hills Parents Association

Bacon Butties were a welcome treat this morning, and helped raise  £123.80. The Bacon Butty stall runs every single Friday, serving a selection of delicious breakfast treats and hot drinks, and is a fabulous meeting point for everyone to catch up at the end of the school week.

Funds raised by the Barrow Hills Parents Association have enabled the purchase of floodlights for our Astro. We look forward to the additional the sports activities this lighting will enable, including the continuation of hockey club after half term.

Our recently relaunched Barrow Hills Parents Association will hold their inaugural meeting at 9am on Friday 14 November in the Refectory. All parents are warmly invited to come along and find out more about how to get involved with events and volunteering opportunities throughout the year. Whether you can spare an hour or a regular commitment it all helps and makes a difference to our school community!

Thanks to our amazing team and the community for your support!
