Welcome to the Barrow Hills Bulletin, your weekly newsletter with a snapshot of life at School.

Message From the Head

Dear Parents,

To complement our provision at the top end (the new flexi-boarding offer announced last week for Year 7 and 8 pupils), we have also started something new at the smaller end with our new ‘Tree Tots’ provision for very tiny people. Each Wednesday, we offer an hour of play for children from 6 months old, accompanied by their parents. If you have any family or friends who might like to connect with us, please do let them know.On the curriculum front, it was lovely to see the enthusiasm in Year 2 during their Roman Day, and likewise the excitement around numeracy with Reception’s Number Fun Day (maths can, and should, be fun and creative at times).

Our U11 girls have travelled to Rugby School today to compete in the regional IAPS Netball Tournament. They have much to live up to following the success of previous seasons, but they are showing really strong form at the moment, finishing in the top 3 of their last two qualifying tournaments.

Looking ahead to next week, a reminder that our Pre-Prep Grandparents’ afternoon takes place on 12th February – always a particularly lovely event in our annual calendar.

Warm regards,
Mr Towers, Head

News from Upper Prep

Year 8 have spent the week in the hall completing their mock CE 13+ examinations and I am very proud of their focus, resilience and determination. I know they have found the practice useful – even though it has been a tiring week!

Our Upper Prep Peer Mentors did a short assembly on Monday introducing themselves to the rest of the school. Our Peer Mentors have given up their lunchtimes to attend training sessions over seven weeks and are now ready to be a ‘listening ear’ to some of the younger children. It has been great to see some of our Peer Mentors seeking out their mentees on the playground at break times.

I was very impressed with all of the children in Year 7 and Year 8 on Wednesday morning when they acted as tour guides for some of the parents from Longacre School. All our children were very polite and knowledgeable and very respectful towards the Longacre families. It is clear that our children are very proud of their school.

Some dates for your diaries
Monday February 9th: Careers Talk for Year 7 and Year 8
Monday February 9th: French Speaking exams for Year 8

Friday February 13th: Break up for half term!

Best wishes,
Mrs Mason, Head of Upper Prep

News from Prep

Although this week has been a slightly quieter one in terms of trips and special events, it has nevertheless been a thoroughly productive few days. Even the rather persistent rain hasn’t dampened our spirits, and the children have continued to approach each day with enthusiasm and energy.

Sometimes it is these steadier weeks that allow us to really focus on what matters most: high-quality learning in the classroom, time to consolidate new skills, and opportunities to enjoy the simple routines of school life. I have enjoyed popping into lessons across the Prep Department and have been delighted to see the children working so diligently, collaborating thoughtfully with their peers, and showing real pride in their efforts.

Despite the wet weather, the children have made the most of their break times and have continued to demonstrate the kindness and consideration we value so highly – whether that’s including others in games, helping one another with tasks, or simply showing good manners around the school. It is these everyday moments that truly reflect the strength of our school community.

With plenty to look forward to, it has been lovely to enjoy this calm and purposeful stretch of the term.

Wishing you all a restful and hopefully drier weekend!

Kind regards,
Miss Tyrrell, Head of Prep

News from Pre-Prep

The arrival of emperors and goddesses on Thursday morning heralded Year 2’s Roman Day! The children were ready to immerse themselves in history for the day with all of their lessons based around their History topic. From designing and creating their own mosaic tiles and shields with beautiful patterns and intricate details, to baking a roman recipe and exploring roman numerals, the day was brimming with fun learning experiences for our eldest Pre-Prep Pupils. This morning it was Number Day in Reception class who also arrived at school dressed in number themed outfits. The children enjoyed a number of hands-on number related activities throughout the day. Thank you parents for your support with costumes!

This week hosted our very first Tree Tots session, here in our own setting. Our first visitors were eagerly exploring through songs, stories, and shared play, with snack time too, while parents were able to enjoy a friendly place to relax and connect with others.

Congratulations to Reuben (Kindy), Ethan (Rec), Evie (Year 1) and Austin (Year 2) who achieved Work of the Week certificates this morning at rewards assembly. Evie and Anabella (Year 1) were also awarded their Silver Award and Sammy (Year 2) gained his Gold Award. Very well done to all of you.

We look forward to welcoming many of your grandparents, or indeed another close relation, to our annual Grandparents’ Afternoon next Thursday, 12th February from 2:15pm.

Have a lovely weekend.
Mrs Barnett
