On Monday, Year 3 took the short drive down to the beautiful South Downs for a day of historical discovery at the wonderful Butser Ancient Farm. The weather was unseasonably warm and sunny so there was little need for boots and waterproofs which are usually a requirement for this trip!
The children started the day with a tour through Butser’s iron age village. They sat in a number of authentic round houses and listened intently to our facilitator. The children eagerly asked lots of questions and were able to demonstrate all that of the things they have learnt this term about the Celts.
The rest of the morning was filled with chalk carving and jewellery making. The children sculpted and coloured their chalk with sharpened flint and dock leaves just as the Celts would have done. They created their own Celtic rings by using pliers and twirly wire round and round in neat swirls.
Finally before lunch the children made the all important trip to the gift shop where they made their purchases, all managing to count out their money at the till!
In the afternoon the children split their time between trying out archaeology and rope weaving as well as a visit to Butser Roman Villa. A highlight for many of the children was seeing the strange communal Roman toilets!
The children had a wonderful time and have since then have written fantastic write ups of their trip in history this week.
